    4343B 2231 help

    Hello
I have a set of 4343B and the surrounds have seen better days on both the woofer and mid woofer. The 2231H looks like it has been rebuilt with the 2235 kit. The 2121H also has some info on it. Would appreciate it if someone could take a look and tell me exactly what I have. Just want to make sure I order the correct surrounds. Name: IMG_1117.JPG

Those are correct and authentic Jbl cones. Get surrounds from Rick Cobb. 2231 and 2121 surrounds.

I did not order the surrounds yet. I have another question. Is that a 2235 recone on the 2231H? Also the 2121H has the dust cap facing forward. Would this mean that it was reconed with a 2122 rather then a 2121H recone kit?

Reason for questions eventually I would like to rebuild the networks to 4344 4345 specs. Reading the 35 page thread and the thread that Mr. Ian did on 4343 upgrade it seems that most individuals recommend reconiing to the 2122 when upgrading the networks.

    Thanks

Looks like it's been reconed. It's normal for dust cap to face out I believe on later 4343B. But the leads being glued out past the dust cap I don't think is correct. But the recone is a real Jbl cone. Usually the type of cone is written in chalk on back of cone somewhere.

Looks like a very bad refoam job too.

I've never seen a 2121 with an outward facing dustcap.
My thought is that someone tried to make a wannabe 2122H out of it. I've seen it before.

This dustcap also looks 100% aftermarket to me.

I guess the question is would the dust cap change the sound being in that configuration? If not and the rest of the kit is OEM than at this time I am OK with it. That is why I posted the pictures. If they are not OEM than I will attempt to get them reconed. I do not even know if kits are available. All writing on the 2121 is in the pictures. The 2231 cone has 2235 written on it and that's why I asked if is a 2235. For me its not cut and dry that is why I am asking for help. For some it may be a stupid question. Eventually I was thinking of getting them redone with 2122 if available.

Also it was my understanding that all 4343B had the 2121H and that they all had the inverted dust cap as martin2395 stated. Not sure why they would have only changed the dust cap either unless as martin2395 said a 2122H look alike.

    Really appreciate all feedback.

You would have to check the back of the 2121 cone for some identification about what kit was used. While it doesn't look right, having an aftermarket dustcap on forward versus inverted really doesn't make a difference except to a future buyer.

You have a 2235 kit because 2231's went NLA long ago. The 2235kit was JBL's recommended replacement, though the kit is not the same. Probably better for you as you are updating the speaker anyway, but probably a detriment to a collector.
That the internet contains a blog documenting your life does not constitute proof that your existence is valid. Sorry.

Thanks for the info. The pictures are all of the writing on the cone. All 4 sides covered on pictures. Decided to look for OEM recone kit and came across a site that might explain why the dust cap was changed. It seems that some sell the surround kit with a new dust cap. I would think that way you could remove the old dust cap and keep the spider centered when replacing the surround and then install new dust cap.

Anyway my 2 cents. I just wish I could verify what kit was used on the 2121H.

Off to bed going fishing in the morning in Delacroix.

    As always Thanks.

I always thought that the inverted dustcap caused the cone breakup of the 2121.
That's why JBL came with 2122H and people started making 2121-2122 hybrids by putting "normal" dustcaps on 2121s'

The 1980 catalog (in front of me) shows 4343B with "normal" dustcap. Apparently changed in mid-stream as per script56 post #6 above.

Are you sure it's not a visual illusion due to color difference between the cone and the dustcap?

I've already seen hundreds of pics of the 4343 and only 1 had normal dustcaps on the 2121, but then again - they were customized as they had black front with wood veneer on the sides.

Just to end this thread. I finished doing the surrounds and everything worked out well. I sent Mr Rick a picture of the speakers and what they were and he responded with what surrounds I would need. I did do a 122a before and had to measure the cone for some reason it seems JBL had 2 different size cones for that speaker.

I did pull up one 1980 catalog and it looks to me that the 4343B has an inverted dust cap. They do have pictures of 4313B and 4315B and the MF does not have the inverted dust cap.

    Again my 2 cents.

    Thanks to all
