JBL S2S subwoofer

Hello guys

This will be my first post on your excellent forum. I've done a search and I know "more"

I have got my hands on a pair of JBL 136hs drivers and I am entertaining the idea of building a pair of s2s clones for my HT.
I know that they don't go as deep is as the "popular" woofers like SVS, Velodyne and DIY Dayton's, but the saying is that the bass they do produce makes doves cry - and that's what I'm into!

I've been googling for a while now (maybe I am not asking the right questions), and there aren't much info out there, reviews are especially lacking.. I am missing some pieces of the puzzle, and I was hoping that I could find someone with first hand knowledge on the s2s or the JBL 136HS driver.

I do have two cab options:


Nr. 1 157 ltrs of effective volume, 2 ports: Vd 4,3 inches and Vl 19,2 inches should give -3 dB at 37 Hz.


Nr. 2 125 ltrs of effective volume, 2 ports: Vd 4,3 inches and Vl 24,8 inches should give - 3 dB at 40 Hz.


Are there better options?

I will be satisfied with it going flat to 30 Hz and -3 or 5 dB at 20 with EQ. But Flat to 20 Hz would be perfect.. Could this be done?

Can you link me to a thorough s2s build thread? This would be just awesome!

The High Pass Filter.. What would you recommend?

Some words on building and tuning the cabinet would be very appreciated.

Welcome to the forum. Have you tried a simulator yet?

Also, are you sure the 136h / 2231 woofers are best for home theater? They won't handle much power and you risk bottoming them out to death. Literally.

IIRC, the 136HS is something closer to an updated 2235 replacement (sub-wise) with accordion surround...
Not really much like the older 2231.

Well. It seems I misread and thought it was 136H while I should have read 136HS

The 136H has a foam surround and is a nice hifi driver. But as the 2235, it can't handle much power. Isn't it the woffer in the L300?
And indeed the 136HS has an accordeon surround. A totally different beast

(which sounded pretty darn good supporting the Timbers Array System at TiDome's!)

No, I haven't simulated it. I got Winisd but the 136HS aint in the driver selection, and on top of that I don't trust my results when using it - too many unknowns.

I asked the same question on AVS and a helpfull guy on AVS forum simulated a suggestion for me. 5 cu. ft. 4" round vents 18" long, should give me 25 Hz at 300w.

The odds are indeed in favour for a bigger cab than the commercial one.

Use the T/S parameters in your Winsd. I suggest also venturing with bigger cabs. How does the frequency response behave at, say 8cft, 10cft? What happens with excursion then?

Also, it is listed w/ Fs 35Hz.

Yeh, it looks like I will need it.. I've settled on a 5 cu ft. cab with 2 x 4" ports 18" deep.. 3/4 MDF and some sort of sandwich front baffle.

If you are looking for deeper bass, I suggest simulating a 10cft enclosure.

PS Let me rephrase. If you are looking for deep bass for your HT system, I suggest selling the 136HS and getting one W15GTi or even a single 2245 18" woofer. Maybe others can chime in, but I don't see how a driver with Fs 35 will get any sub bass (for HT). Those are basically 2226 (with a heavier cone) which many will consider an upper bass driver.
