I am a litlle confused about reconing issues .

I have read if I am not wrong that you can use an Le10a and recone it to a 2123 ?.

If yes , can you also recone an le15a to 2235 ?

Also ; why is is easy to get aftermarket recone kit for le10 -le8-le14 anf impossible for 2123 etc ....

I don't know all the answers. About the Le-15, no you can't use that basket to make a 2235. A 2231A or H yes. There are a couple of threads that can give you the basket list that can be used. Try a search for 2235

Absolutely not! The LE15A is an underhung design and the 2235 and most of the JBL woofers are overhung. This means that the LE15A uses a very short voicecoil in a tall gap where as the 2235H has a long or tall voicecoil in a short gap.

2123 is a newer design? Just a guess.

    Ok Finally :

Le15A can't be reconed to other number !

Le10a can be recone to 2122 or 2123 ? Just to make it clear ?
If 2123 is a new design it should be easyer to find after market recone kit ?

Yes, a LE10 can be reconed to a 2123. Same basket, same magnet. Also, an E110 can be reconed to a 2123... and those musical instrument drivers are probably more prodigious than the LE10s.

I'll try to check on the availability of an aftermarket 2123 kit. I believe there's one available. I'd be surprised if it's NOT available, since it's functionally so similar to the E110 (IIRC, same cone, just different voice coil and dustcap, essentially)...

    Regards,
    Gordon.

    Reconed 136A

I have a question for GordonW similar to Gerards. One of my L200b 15" 136A woofers was reconed by the prior owner after an "accident". The other 136A woofer has the original cone and both have new foam surrounds done by a JBL Pro shop. Since the two cones are not exactly alike will this make a difference sonically? The JBL factory spec sheet Mr Widget posted for me recommends replacing both cones to match. A second question is re the JBL 2231A 15" woofer, is this the pro version of the 136A and could it be substituted?

The 2231A is indeed the pro version of the 136A, using the identical cone kit, and when that was discontinued both models were affected. If you can find an orignial 2231A it would be the same as the 136A.

If the 136A recone was recent it would have the 2235 kit, and although it is very similar it would not be exactly the same sonically. Giskard has described the difference as an improved suspension. If you are hearing a difference and it bothers you that would be sufficient reason to have the other woofer done, but otherwise I probably would not worry about it, but then I'm not particularly tweak and have long since been corrupted by euphonic midfi.

    136A Recone

Speakerdave I'd have to pull the reconed woofer but if I remember correctly it had a 2235 sticker on it. If I read your reply correctly this is an improved suspension version of the original 136A cone. Also appreciate the info that the 2231A woofer is the same as the 136A woofer. I want the woofers to sonically match and will probably have the second 136A woofer reconed with a 2235 cone if it isn't too costly. Any idea as to the price range for my JBL Pro shop to do the 2235 recone? Many thanks for the info.

Before you spend the money you might see if Giskard or someone else will weigh in with specific knowledge of the difference. If JBL recommends both be done, they probably should be.

I always check the Orange County Speaker Repair site for price guidance on reconing and refoaming, but since you are in MA you will probably want to try and find someone closer. I have no information about the East Coast services.

    Recone in MA

    Majick 47,

For recone in Massachusetts, you may want to contact New England Speaker in Stoneham, MA (just north of Boston), phone 781-438-1786, ask for Bill.

I personally wouldn't waste my time on 136A or 2231A cones. The C8R2235 cone is the replacement cone assembly for those drivers. The 2235 recone kits are very reasonable in price.

The C8R2123 recone kit is still available so an aftermarket kit is unnecessary.

Yes the C8R2235 is the current replacement. In JBL's wisdom, I am actually not being sarcastic here, they have discontinued the C8R2231 as the two drivers are so similar with the 2235 being slightly better especially in the low end. Same is true of the LE85/2420. They dropped the original 2420 diaphragm for the 2421 version.

I agree about the 2235 kit prices. They are a real bargain. I think the current retail price is about $115.

    136a Recone

Mr Widget and Giskard with the price of the 2235 recone around $115 I will have my JBL Pro shop make sure both 136A woofer cones match. Probably be the cheapest upgrade I will make compared to the new JBL oem 2421 diaphrams for the LE-85 horns. After that comes the 2405 tweeters and 3106 crossovers. In the end everything will be next to new and serve me well for many years of good listening. Thanks!
