Altec 414 as midbass for JBL 4350/4355

I know this has come up before but couldn't find out if anyone has actually tried an Altec 414 as the midbass in a JBL 4 way. I'm currently researching on what to do next on my 2235/2397/2440BE/2405 project. I know I'd like to add another 2235H but I'm unsure ifthe 2202H is the way go.

The 414 is an excellent driver with a light cone. It works best in a two-way, as ALTEC is best known for, but IMHO you won't be disappointed. Just make sure you polarize the ALTEC to the JBL components. One thing, the 414 cone kit is still available through GPA, whereas the 2202 kit, if it isn't already, will be doomed sooner or later along with other JBL kits to the non-serviceable list, and may only be found as an after market item.

I would also add a minor caution regarding power levels not normally seen in the home,
which the 2202 will endure while the 414 (particularly older units) will not. If not considered,
the 414 could end up being the proverbial canary in a coal mine.

I was hoping for this system to be able to show the magic of the altec midbase with the kick in the pants of the JBL dual 15's. This system only for light duity home use but would like to play it at "11" if necessary. But destroying a good 414 is not an option in my book. Any thoughts on the Gauss 3184's found in some of the Westlakes?

Well, if Spinal Tap mode is an option, perhaps the 414 would not be the wise choice. The 414 by no means is a sledge hammer, even one which is brand new. It's only rated at 50 watts. grumpy has given sound advise. As for using a Gauss, the only person I know who may have re-cone kits would be Bill Hanuschak. He inherited all the remaining Gauss cone kits when he Left Telex. It's a shame all the best speakers will eventually have only after market kits available.
