    Build Thread -continued-

This is a continuation of my previous Build Thread that has morphed so much that I thought I'd start fresh with the latest version.

Thanks to so much feedback from members here and elsewhere, I've elected to go all out and try to optimize each of these old drivers in their ideal bandpass.

Here are some pictures right after construction of the cabinets. The main cabinets will house a 2206 12", a 2123 10", a TAD 4001 or a JBL 2446 Truextent and a 2405. In the 9 cf subwoofer cabinet, I'll use a 2245 per channel. This will all be managed by a miniDSP 4x10hd and a pair of ATI 1506 amps.

Wow! Thanks for all the pictures looks like an awesome build. Love those 4001 CDs! Out of curiosity, did you test out the sound before and after added the mass-loaded vinyl? I'd be curious to hear how it affected the sound.

Also love the curved Sub cabs. Very well done.

    Thanks danvprod.

Since I posted last, I've added the drivers to the cabinet and started doing some very crude initial testing (by ear) and am generally impressed with what I hear. I think this has a chance of being something really special. Waiting for my miniDSP Dirac to show up and need to get to the fine tuning of the PEQ in the miniDSP 4x10Hd but it is all good and fun.

I didn't do any formal testing with the vinyl above the tried and true knuckle wrapping. It certainly helps, but not enough for my taste. I'm going to add another ¼" layer frame of mdf to the sides with another ¼" mdf layer to create an air gap in between to really damp out the cabinet resonances. That should be a huge improvement toward making these cabinets quiet.

    Thanks
    Paul

I should note that the JBL 2446 has the ribbed Ti phram in it. I'm holding off putting the TruExtent phrams in until I get more experience with the miniDSP. I don't want to fry one of the phrams inadvertently. Right now, I'm using just the 2123 and 2446. When I finally ran out of time last night, I settled the xover at 900. I started at 1000 and worked my way up to 1200 and down to 800 in increments of 50hz. So far, by ear, that seems to be the most natural setting at this point. I also limited the 2446 & TAD at 8000 so that it removes much of the roughness above.

As you can see from the pictures below, I've been making a little progress on my system. I'm still adding an important cabinet mod to my mains. I'm adding ½" to each side in ¼" MDF layers. The first layer will be around the perimeter of the cabinet and at the brace points. This is where there is the least amount of vibration. The second layer of ¼" MDF will cover the sides entirely and create a ¼" air gap in between to trap the significant communication of vibrations into the room. The front and back of the main cabinet are 1.5" laminated MDF so they don't vibrate enough to worry about. Using my ear only, I've settled on a 900hz crossover for the 2123 and 2446Be. I'm still using 50hz for the 2245/2206, 300hz for the 2206/2123 and 10khz for the 2446/2405, all LR 24db.For the eagle eyes among us, you'll see on top of my TEAC transport, I have (unconnected at this point) my new miniDSP Dirac unit. I've got a lot of work to do at the DSP level however before I even worry about what a Dirac can fine tune. I also have received boxes of ATS Acoustics sound absorption panels to use on the side/rear walls and the ceiling. Lots of work to do.... I'm really curious to start doing some measurements and seeing how far off my ear is....Adding a few more photos...

I'm having some problems with the automatic orientation of the photos, so I'll add them one at a time. Sorry in advance...
