Drivers for Everst cabinets

I have ordered a pair of the Everst cabinets at the Hornslet auction and am now thinking what drivers to use The first step is to make it a two way speaker with a replica of the orginal horn, at a later time a 3-way with 045BE might be an alternative.




I'm not going to make a "Everst clone" with drivers and stuff, but I really like the Everst design and want to make the best speaker I can afford. It will probably be run by a 4-channel amp with DSP, Crown iTech, MiniDSP or similar.

MF driver will probably be 2450SL with Truextent, or maybe 2447 (if they fit) with Truexent, another alternative for MF is TAD or maybe also JBL D2.

Bass is more difficult to decide since it's difficult (and expensive) to get some of the most desiarable woofers from JBL...

Woofers I probably can get:
- ME150HS
- 1500FE
- 1501FE
- 2226H

Woofers that are harder to find:
- 2216ND
- AL150X drivers

None JBL:
- TAD 1601
- AE TD15M/X
- BMS
- B&C

Any inputs?

And if someone have pictures of a disablemed Everst I would be really grateful, espesicall looking for details like hornparts, hornthroats, vents...

I think that UHF driver would be a problem, as any most of the VHF compression drivers are fare away from the 476Be. From my experience measuring 2450-1.5 with SL or Be-Truextent 4" diaphragms using a DIY wooden horn inspired by H66000 horn really usable frequency would be 10~12kHz.

For bass drivers, may be a kind of combination ONE LF type ( such as 2235 or similar from the other producers, example Beyma) and ONE kind of mid-bass ( TAD 1601, JBL 2226, JBL 2227 )...

Thank you for input! I use 2447BE today in 2352 horn today (going to be replaced With Seos24 very soon) and agree that it lacks UHF, but Seos is supposed to be quite much better, and so I hope Everest horn will be, but not sure..

Regarding woofer, I did also think about mixing 2227 and W1500H but this means I need to seperate the cabinet into two and that will not be easy... so I think I will stick With two identical woofers.

About VHF, on my opinion, the problem is diaphragm 'breakup' so the response is full of peaks and notches.
The Be-Truextent diaphragm, I would expect, would rapidly decline its output over 10kHz. If You decide to use the driver over 10KHz, I would suggest JBL D8R2445, as it seems to produce 20kHz.
Do not forget that H66000 horn is mostly CD type ( I guess), as its internal (throat) part is almost conical horizontal walls angled about 60 degrees off-axis.

As one of the 15-inch driver can serve as mid-bass, it does not need large volume, if used over 300~400Hz, the separate box can be very small ( less the 20Lit), so can be relatively easy mounted behind the driver ( PVC pipe box (or even made from cardboard) whose depth is about 20~25cm, filled with the absorption wool)

Congratulations , I thought you were pretty enthusiastic for those boxes , glad you got them.
Boy, now you have some research to do !!
For what it's worth here is my suggestion , for the bass use 2235 / 2234 using the 2235 as a helper at VLF.
The 2234 will play better up to the horn ( with no mass ring ) and in any case you can find these drivers reasonably easily. I don't see any big problems dividing the cabinet , there are plenty of bracing frames to screw panels on to.



For the HF you really have to go down the D2 path , easily said of course but it will need a lot of care over the throat design but it will play from 800 without any problems.
With a bit of luck you will end up with a M2 on stearoids.

The dual 2234H's from the 4435 could be a great solution. I think the Everest II volume is roughly a half cubic foot smaller than the 4435 volume. Since these boxes lack the port system you can tune them any way you want.

I'd sell you some 1501Fe's but I only have three (LCR). They are really nice drivers. I had four of the new 1501AL-2's but recently sold one pair of them, not needing both pairs. I only have one pair of the 2216Nd as well, so I'm not much help with dual woofers at the moment. It is possible that I could have a dual woofer solution at the beginning of the new year but nothing sooner.

I think this makes a lot of sense. Use the 4435 alignment and give it a shot. If you don't love it, you can continue looking for alternatives and the market for 2234Hs is strong enough that you will always get you cash back out of them.

I's stick with a pair of 2234H too.
The 2235H has no interest compared to the 2234H when EQ is a given.

Thanx for the picture macaroonie, it show a lot of what I wanted to know! It also makes me want some better picture of the hornthroat and adapter if someone have.... Or even better, someone have CAD files or know how to get one?

I've had 4435 with dual 2234 and agree they are pretty good but I thought modern woofer would be even better! 2235 is quite often for sale but 2234 is not too common on the market, at least not in OK condition. But if one could choose, which one is better of the JBL alternatives?

And what do you think about D2 vs 2450BE?
