Thoughts on the Mark Levinson M1 speaker

It looks like Mark is at it again with a new(ish) line of speakers using the Daniel Hertz label. They use a compression driver (>1800hz), a 12" Mid and an 18" Sub (<80hz). These are billed at being >100db efficient and seem to be very similar to the Synthesis systems but maybe more geared for much higher SPL. Anyone know what drivers he might be using? They look like JBL or TAD to me, but I'm not sure. I imagine these are quite pricey. What do you think about running a 12" up to 1800hz? That CD waveguide reminds me of the Manta Ray Altec Horn of the Model 14. Anyway, here are some pictures.

The Daniel Hertz speakers have been around for a couple of years(3-4?) mr. Putin has a complete Daniel Hertz setup with those speakers.

Thoughts on the Mark Levinson M1 speaker

"Shaking the wall behind me were the big M1 loudspeakers ($120,000/pair)"

I'd much rather own the far more impressive M2 system at $25,000/pair which includes non-Levinson amps.

Interesting comment. "Far more impressive". Why?

    Great find matsj!!!! Thank you.

It is really great that those drivers are available off the shelf, less his fancy stainless steel frame.

    My two cents...

Far more advanced engineering and significantly better R&D facilities? Beyma drivers are certainly good, but the M2 drivers are exceptional.

The Levinson system offers very high sensitivity and the ability to use a wide range of amps and all analog electronics, but at the end of the day, I'd bet on the M2 in any double blind test with a digital source and quite possibly with an analog source too.

Oh I'm sorry. I thought you were all referring to Daniel Hertz's M2 system, not JBL's. In that case, I absolutely agree, but it just seems so odd that Levinson uses that 12" driver to 1800hz. It would seem to me that he would have all sorts of beaming problems at that frequency. Maybe he doesn't care about a wide sound stage???

Since that 12" has cone decoupling rings, the effective diameter may shrink at 1800Hz, so the beaming may not be so bad.
