crazy idea?? convert dual 15 bass bin (4508) to 4345 cabinet??

I see that these empty 4508-type cabinets (dual 15s, formerly housed 2225s, 2226s or 2035s) sometimes go for next to nothing, or are even trashed. Loaded with 2035s they seem to worth maybe $200 (at the most?) (hmmm, about what a pair of 2035s might sell for on ebay...)

Anyways.... Looking at the dimensions I see they are 'close' to that of a 4345 in size. Real close...an inch or so in any direction but about the same inside volume...and it got me thinking that if you cut or route out the front baffle you could make a new one to suit the 4345...would it work? The replacement baffle would be mounted to square backing stock and then be removable (like the 4343). Been done before? Or, is this too much messing around to really make it work?? Seems like an economical way to get to a 4345 type of speaker. Of course there's getting all the parts for a 4345 but for me building a giant box is the hard part... (Yes, lots of daydreaming going on these days... summer time and all. :-) ) all comments welcome!

Why not lay the cabs on their sides, load them with 2235H's and finally add another cab on top with "10 or "12 mids, "2 driver and a 2405H and make a wannabe 4350/55

I like that idea, but it's the form factor I guess - too wide. A 4345-sized box is about as big as I can handle (with a friend) and fit into the living space. Well, even that's probably too big (200 lbs!!) I should just stick with my plan of a box sized between that of a 4315 and 4344 ... or like you say, 2 boxes: a bass box and then the 3-way on top.
Trouble is, some used surplus theater speakers came up for sale locally, with 2446s and dual 2035s, and it all just gets me thinking too much...

I have a couple of friends near Detroit that have bought a ton of theater take out stuff from dusty but perfect Altec VOTT to the boxes your talking about.

The two big surprises out of all of it were, how much better the old VOTT units sound compared to the newer ones and how good the 2035's sound. So if you can steal them, you likely will have a good platform to work with.

Yup. They are particle board and vinyl wrapped.

That is a totally appropriate solution considering they are made to be stacked behind a movie screen where they will live out their lives in a climate controlled environment out of sight in the dark, undisturbed. Road boxes they aren't, ultra high fidelity home boxes they aren't, but at what they sell for on take out, (nearly free) they are a huge bang for the buck.

I have six 4719's running in the shop, bought for less than the drivers alone sell for on the bay. What's not too like?

from what Google shows me, I think I could live with those in the house. They look to be well braced inside, and seem to be roomy enough to fit some horn types into the box above the woofer.
