2206HPL. What does the PL mean?

I'm sure this have been covered but searching for PL gives too many threads to be helpful. What does the PL mean?

Not sure what PL actually stands for but in general it means the driver doesn't have the fancy JBL label or the rubber boot on the magnet.

Aha. Thanks for the reply. Now were getting some where. Here is a picture of the label. It looks very industrial but on the rubber boot. One of mine has a boot, the other does not???

I think the "PL" was used for speakers that JBL shipped in cabinets. All of the "PL" speakers I have seen, only have the name painted on and no rubber boot.

The magnet tires were, and maybe still are, available separately and sometimes guys would buy them to trim out their woofers.There is an old post saying PL means ProtectionLess, but that may just be an opinion.

Those tires are a available new. Still current on the 2206, 2226, and 2241 as they all use the same motor.

I believe PL means Private Label as in used in their (JBL's) own speaker system assemblies. The red print label and tire drive the new price of a 2242 up nearly $50.

Thanks Dave and Barry! I'll be ordering a new tire tomorrow to finish it off. I called JBL last week for some other things for a CD and the guy that answered the phone in Parts (Everett) couldn't have been any cooler and more helpful. He's worked there for 33 years and still loves their gear.

I'll call it Private Label then when I explain it... Sounds more exclusive. Hahaha

I don't think it's exclusive, they are just not dolled up for retail sale.

Protector Less, no protecting rubber on the magnet

I just got off the phone with Everett at JBL in Tech Support. He is a great guy and has helped me with several replacement parts that I've needed to fix my drivers. He has worked there for 33 years and still digs his job. I love it!

Anyway, he said the PL stands for Plain Label. Years ago JBL decided to put the industrial label and omit the rubber tire magnet protector on systems where they get no value for the added cost. Makes sense and mirrors what you guys have been saying.
