    JBL 4622 opinion

Hello. Firstly I want to describe my system. The system is active using a bed fds crossover with activated the cd horn eq. On mid and highs I use an Accuphase p20 power amp and on lows a crown psa2. The preamp is a Mark Levinson no26. The phono preamp is a Ear 834p with a denon sut. Turntables a technics sp10 mk2 and a denon dp6000. The speakers are the JBL 4722N and the previous speakers were the JBL 4560a with 2390 2440 2402 combo.

Using the 4722 for a couple of months now I can say that the musicality , the detail and attack is missing compared to the 4560 combo.

First of all the horn&driver of the 4722 (2430h) canÂ’t be compared on midrange detail and open sound of the 2390 & 2440 . Yes they will not go that high but still the 2402 do the work.

The bottom section of the 4722n (double 2035) provides good bottom but with capable power amps (4ohm output of each cabinet) and still even if the 4560 donÂ’t have the same bottom, provides more air, space and attack.

I have tried the 2390 & 2440 combo on the 4509 cabinets with reasonable good results but still not that good as with the 4560.

One last thing is that when I use the n7000 between the 2402 and 2440 the sound of vinyl is harsh but the CD player sounds awesome lol but when I use just a cap on the tweeter vinyl sounds great but missing that warm midrange that the n7000 gives to the 2390 2440 combo

    Hi Soulman,

From previous gear you have shown, i think you're basically a horn man. "Attack" is the key word here confirming the matter. Attack is linked to transient response and vented boxes aren't best in this regard. Horn and sealed ones are better.

Horning is like any addiction, difficult to fight when you've got it. First you need to admit, confess guilt (horn sin), there's no jail time to serve or fine to pay here, thus you can move on to rehab quickly.

That means putting the 4722 in storage and bringing back the 4560a in the listening room asap for healing. Then happiness should be back on that front...

I’m back ! Well the 4560 are back from my last post, although now I feel that I’m missing the tight bass of a reflex enclosure. How I could improve the mid section of my 4622N? Of course I will add a pair of 2405 tweeters for the top end but I feel that is something wrong with the 2384 horns or drivers. Any opinions ? Regards!

I use the 4722's in my system but changed the compression driver out as I did not like the sound of the 2430h. I went with the 2453h-SL CD and sounds much better. My choice was based on this long thread on the 4722's: https://www.avsforum.com/threads/jus...#post-42167329

I agree with this, and I'll add that a 2447 also works really, really well on the 2384 waveguide from the 4722. Especially when fitted with SL diaphragms. I've been running this combo for several years with dual 2226Hs, crossed actively at 630Hz.

FWIW: I am not a fan of the entire 243X series. I much prefer the larger drivers... the SL versions being the best choices next to Be or Mg.
