Jbl L200

Can someone tell me what components make up a L200 compared to a L200B...l know it's probably been gone over a million times but l'm worn out searching and l'm confused..would like to make a pair up but don't know what xover or whether it's a Le15B or a 136 15" driver, LE85 hf drivers????? help please..These L200 went from 73 till 79 as well so there are probably a lot of variations...does any body know about them??

Objectively the L200B is a bit more accurate and has a bit deeper bass, but at the cost of a bit of sensitivity.

What is the goal - are you building a pair from scratch, filling empty cabinets (like I did),
or trying to determine if a pair you are interested in is original?

If building a pair from "scratch", you may do better with other drivers than with the originals.

They originally came with the LE-85 midrange combo - that's the 2307 short exponential horns (metal horn kind of like a trumpet) and 2420 compression drivers.

About the woofers ... in an 2012 thread, Mr Widget once said:

L200s originally came with the fabric surrounded LE15B and then the later L200B came with the 136A woofers.

Filling my cabinets from scratch, I originally used a 2420 mid-driver and the short 2307 horn (together known as the LE-85).
I originally used the 2235 woofers, then swapped in a similar pair of 2234 Woofers (a 15 inch with foam surround and no "mass ring") because they were handy.

Toddalin and Subwoof have both built slightly modified versions with a "bump out" on the back of the cabinet that allowed them to use the longer 2312 horn (used in the L300 and 4333 speakers) that allows a lower, smoother blend at the bass and midrange crossover point. That horn is recommended over the shorter 2307 horn.

I tweeked mine further with a 2405 slot tweeter and built a 4333 based crossover to make it a 3 way -
then later swapped in the larger 2445 midrange driver and a custom wooden "Smith" horn.

I would recommend using the L300/4333 networks that Heather suggested. This is a three-way and is significantly better than the more cost effective but more compromised two way of the L200.

Use the 2235H woofer, the LE85/2420 mid on the longer fog horn with lens, the 077/2405 tweeter, and build the cabinet to 5 cu ft tuned to 30Hz.

This will give you the best performance in that class of speaker. It is reasonably extended in range, it offers a pretty dynamic sound, and all of the parts are fairly easily found. I would caution you on buying used drivers... even beautiful looking examples often no longer measure up to spec. My first choice would be to buy cores and have them rebuilt by an experienced authorized service center.

Thanks again for all your help...l was a bit concerned about buying the old drivers..like LE15b's..they ask a fortune for them and as you stated..are old and probably don't measure to spec...the 2235H are 8 ohms l think..l got to be careful with the impedance's here as some speakers are 16 ohm...

Though I've seen that fun photo again (and remember and LOVE the pink platypus sound diffuser!! ), you have just given me a good idea for my own project!!
