2397's mounted inside an enclosure?

Greetings, All,

I wonder if any of you have ever mounted a 2397 inside an enclosure, so that just the lips are apparent on the baffle? It might be a fool's errand, but I've been thinking about that lately. If any one has ever done that, or remembers someone elses system in which it was done, please post a link. I would LOVE to see some photos of 4 and 5-way systems in which this was done!! Why not just have them set on top of a pair of nicely finished cabinets like the ones Wardsweb built & posted
on a AV site -

or perhaps some strategy like the sectoral horns used in the ALTEC 19s, so the horns lay inside an upper chamber not open to the lower bass chamber, then some soft foam around the sides and top to "seal" them into that cavity ...

Thank you both, very much! Exactly what I was hoping to see. As to placing them on top of another cabinet, that is most certainly the path of least resistance, and probably the way I will go. But, long ago, I saw a pair of 2397s actually built into the cabinet which housed the entire selection of components, and it looked nice. (Not as nice as Ward's work, though... not by a long shot!)

I also once had a pair of M19 enclosures, with no components. They were in fairly nice condition, and finished in oak veneer. I kept thinking I would "do something with them", as I have both 811 and 511 Altec horns, and one pair of Altec compression drivers, which sound very sweet to me. Alas, I never did get anything going with those cabs, and I finally gave them back to the person who had originally given them to me! Oh, well.... easy come, easy go, right?

I was digging around in the Hobbit Hole, looking for something else, and found a pair of HF cabs that I'd bought many, many years ago, with Community horns in them. I still have my Altec drivers mounted to those horns, and that's one of the things that made me think about a 2397 inside an enclosure. We'll see how it all turns out. I am most certainly not the woodworker that Ward, or many others here, are. But, I've built a lot of cabinets, in the old days, and maybe I can create something that goes on top of another cabinet, without having to install the 2397 & driver inside the main enclosure. I mounted mine through a rectangular slot in the baffle and mastic sealed from the rear.
a short strip of 3/4 batten secured the horn to the rear baffle.
you must prop the rear of the horn/ adapter and driver - I almost broke my wrist when mounting the 2441 single handed, be sure to get help.

I´ve never seen a system with a built in 2397 but thats what Im aiming for with the to be system I describe in this thred. You are able to cross the horn/driver combination lower when you have them mounted in a baffle.

Yep. I used to use them for both Hi-Fi, and for a small PA, mounted to my Altec drivers, and crossed at 1,200 HZ. They sounded very nice, at least to me. I "think" those horns are 60°x40°, but also still have the paperwork on them (someplace around here), and could check to be certain. For the bottom end, I made two enclosures, using JBL's enclosure construction information. But, as I had no 15" JBL's at that time, I used the Professional 15" offering from CTS, and truthfully, down to 50HZ, they sounded very natural and good, and tight bass, and some good snap. That was back when I was playing drums and singing in a "piano, bass and drums" trio, and those little cabs + the Community horns and Altec drivers, worked perfectly for us. Thanks for the info on how you accomplished this task. That definitely helps, and let's me know that it would probably be better to build specific cabs for that setup, and install all the correct bracing for the horn and driver, instead of revamping an old cab. Much appreciated! Though I'll use the 2445 drivers that I have, if they don't sound good to me, after fiddling with them, I may have to seek out a pair of 2441 drivers, with JBL diaphragms, and call it good. If that happens, I'll save the 2445s to use in a PA, someday. Thanks, again, and God Bless!

Hi Doc

I mounted small Smith horns inside a cabinet by attaching 1.5"x3" to the top and bottom of the horn as guides. The horns was then mounted through the baffle from behind.

Here's a picture of the result. Not furniture standard, but then again it is a rebuild and they aren't in the living room any more...

Thank you for sending the link to your project. That's exactly what I have in mind, other than moving the 2405 to over the Smith horn, just for fun. I'll bet your system sounds outstanding, too! I also had another idea yesterday, and will pursue that as time passes, and then if it comes to fruition, share it here. Today, I head down the mountain to meet Grumpy for some BBQ and to buy another 4645 cabinet from him. So, things are finally moving forward on the big project!
