    L5's or L112's?

Newbie here - I just got a pair of JBL L5's and am very, very happy. A Yamaha AX-592 is pushing the notes through the speakers. I've been lusting for some JBL L112's but have yet to hear a set. eBay's prices get rather high, so I'm wondering if the 112's are that much better than my L5's or would I be better off with the L5's and take my wife on a vacation. Any thoughts are appreciated and thank you in advance for any advice.

L5's are probably better. L5's definitely have a better tweeter. The L112's probably have the edge on the bottom end, as the 128H is pretty amazing, but you can always keep the L5's and add a sub...

    Welcome!
    Wow, that's a tough one!

    I have both the L5 and the L112, as well as a few others . (L1, L3, L5, L7, L112, L150A, L96, L80T, 4412A, 4345 . . . )

I currently have the L3s on the same system as the 4412A which is very similar to the L112, even with that "better" tweeter (I happen to love the 044), and I have to admit I often prefer the sound of the L5. They are just darn impressive, whatever you compare them to. I've never had them in the same room as the L112 but I'm not sure my opinion would be much different and I've owned the L112s for over thirty years.

I'd suggest saving your money for a pair of L7s and you'll probably own a pair of L5 and L7 for about the cost of the L112.
". . . as you have no doubt noticed, no one told the 4345 that it can't work correctly so it does anyway."—Greg Timbers

Thank you for the help. I do have a JBL E250P sub hooked in with the L5's. I've heard things I didn't know existed in the music I've listened to. I got the L5's for $300 and the sub for $100 (Craigslist), so I feel pretty good my "investment." I'm fast becoming a 2.1 enthusiast! Thanks again.

stay happy with the L5s. the sound already attested to by others, you also have drivers that will not have surround rot and need work, on a speaker that's ~10yrs newer, and the 9" width is MUCH more suited to a modern looking home theater flanking a flat screen IMVI(very imformed)O

that's close to most asking prices for L7's alone anymore. yes, we have gotten L7's cheaper, but the prices SEEM to be on the rise.

The issue with the L7 has always been proximity. You can't easily ship them, or not economically. If they were worth $2500 then people wouldn't mind paying for freight but at $2-500 they won't so the selling price varies with proximity to a large population of prospective purchasers. Remote locations either won't get a bid or won't get a high asking price. They still remain an under-valued bargain in JBLs, if you can find a pair somewhat locally.

The fact that the price is on the rise is likely largely due to discussion about the '90s L-series here and in T-Domes thread. Job well done for those of us including orphan JBLs in our investment portfolios. Or at least those of us who have told our significant others what a great deal we got in order to expand our speaker collections. My widow could be rich, some day.

I did smirk at one line in that L112 ad ... (as a former L65 owner)

"Selling only because I have some L65's."
