    JBL Sovereign I cabinet refinish

    Hi all,
After my car restoration, back to speakers/audio stuff.
I've been hanging on to a pair of Sovereign's with the S7R package for a few years now with the intent of refinishing the cabinets. I almost sold them the way they were but decided to do the resto job. Has anyone ever heard of or seen Sovereign's with an oiled finish? I like working with oil based finishes and certain I could do a far better job than tackling poly. I believe JBL only offered these with a polyurethane type finish.
I've started stripping the cabinets which are in really nice shape, the grill cloth has a good chance of being saved as well.
Any thoughts on going the oiled route?
Full disclosure- I will likely be selling these as I just don't have the room for them.
    Thanks

    No suggestions or experience??

Oh well. I started the stripping process, will put up pic's of the finished cabinets. I am stripping it using chemicals/sawdust, they only way to go especially with the cabinet style and detail.

I did sand down mine completely before restoring them to original finish. Here's the restoration thread: http://www.audioheritage.org/vbullet...gn-restoration

    Good luck with your project.

    Sovereign's done

    Hello all,
Finished the resto job yesterday. Decided to go with stripping the finish, sanding/prepping and re-staining with an oil base finish.Whoever gets them in the future can go with how they are and add a poly coat or even darken them. Wife say's no way in hell they can stay, at least I had the joy of making them more presentable.

    selling the wrong item

Living / marriage is a balancing act...she likes porcelain figurines, you like engine parts..she likes gardening and potted plants, you like old playboys and woodworking hand tools.

When it comes down to living spaces and such, deciding between the speakers / computer accessories from best buy and vintage JBL's that will rearrange bowel positions should NOT be in question...

Perhaps an intervention is in order...

My late wife would LOVE the massive speakers and would remove pink floyd from the CD player and put in EW&F and ask to dance..

    sigh..
