Trouble mounting a sub1500

The surround on the SUB1500 can eclipse the mounting holes and if you use a screw large enough not to pass though the hole, it can put the surround under stress.


There is also a tiny step in the hole of the frame: it's starts out as .315" and necks down to .255 further in.
Is this step really what I should be using to pull the frame to the baffle?
Like I said, this step is teeny...i just don't want to crack the frame as well. Also I foresee finding hardware that will fit just so is gonna be exhausting.

Some back story on this woofer...
I bought it on craigslist as a full passive sub (already in a 2.3cuft box).
I just pulled it out of it's box minutes ago, here is what I found.

Okay, to recap:
1. The cracks in the surround cause air leaks, so I need to seal them up...but with what? I'm thinking 3M window-weld, but I'm no chemist.
2. The little plastic terminal thingy isn't just coming loose from the frame, it can only be used once and that ship has sailed.
3. Driver mounting: I've never seen such a tight tolerance mounting system. Perhaps I should abandon the holes altogether and use little clamps along the outside?

I filled the cracks in the surround with the adhesive from a vinyl repair kit...will it hold? I'll just have to abuse the beast and see.



I solved the mounting problem with washers I made on my mini mill, they are press fit.


I had some binding posts laying about, so I tried those out as terminals. All I needed to buy was a few plastic washers and O-rings to insulate the works from the frame.

Also you can see the hefty brass tabs for the tinsel leads.

Nice touch on the connectors. BTW is there anyway to mount those speakers without tearing the surround?

Thanks, and yes; damaging the surround is not necessary. You just need a screw with a head that's smaller than .315" and larger than .255".
It's easy to find such a screw, but I believe unless the head diam is in the .315-.310" range, you'll eventually destroy the frame if you remove & install it a few times.
That's why I went bonkers and made steel press-fit inserts.

Also, if the surround appears to cover a part of the bolt hole, trim it back just far enough to uncover said hole.
