    4410's; anybody like 'em

4410's how do they sound? If compared to L96 or L36...any thoughts. Are the 4410's a desireable speaker known to perform well?

I flat out loved mine ...but they became a victim of "just too many quality speakers in one house" syndrome. They are many times described as "clinical or cool" and never as "warm/fun". They blow L36's clean off the planet . but their spaghetti wood veneer is not universally admired, the 4410's grilles SUCK ...posts can be broken by looking at them sideways, I think.

Really.... they are a mastering monitor, not a home sounding consumer speaker.

I guess it depends on if you are looking for Good Time Charlie or Dr. DeBakey

hmmm; thought the L36's could be considered "good time Charlie" but your experience has the 4410's blowing them away. My listening experience might not lend itself to a melody by Dr. Debakey, or I really like my L166 and am looking for another pair of 3ways that won't stray too far from the Horizons that suit my tastes very well. How much of a party pooper would a pair of Century 100's be?

the L100's are a step below the L166's IMHO ...Century xover is just too basic....it runs woofer "full range" and overlaps into mid ranges range. Look for more 166's ?

I'm a fan of the "Ti" series ..have 250 & 18's ....would like to audition the 120ti , 3 way 12 inch evolution of the 100/166 with the Ti tweet.

actually preferred the 2 way L26 over the same driver 3 way L36 ....network plays a big factor.....ie: did NOT care for the L80T , but the nearly identical drivers in the 4410 with a different xover yielded much different results.

Wonder if 4311 xovers might help a Centurys' sound. Or maybe there is a tried and true xover mod or replacement that does in fact "fix" the Centurys' xover issue?

I have 4412A's in my man cave mounted as bookshelves over a pool table in a narrow room as near field monitors. They sound wonderful. Very clear and accurate and the room is just right for them. I have heard the 4410 has a tighter bass for music but the 4412 sounds fine.Name: barnspeakers 001.jpg

" And we might as well take a look at the original crossover right away, because it's simplicity itself: 8 uF to the mid and 3 uF to the tweeter. That's all! Both drivers connected via an L-Pad for attenuation. Mid connected with inverted polarity. Having a 12" bass driver running full range is a bold choice and a lot of work must have gone into designing the 123A driver to produce a smooth roll off. "

Well I "need" another pair of 3ways and my preferred choices L166, L150, L112, 4410/4412 are now much to expensive. So I found a very minty pair of Century 100's for $250...what to do? Anybody ever got the Century's up to speed with the Jantzen xover or any other xover/mod?

I like them very much, but remember this is a near field monitor doesn't play very laud.

from your posts, in the 3 way 10's, I've owned L26,L36,4410 (preferred 4410)
    in the 3 way 12's ..L100,L166,4412 (preferred L166)

    sold the L166;s ( 3 pairs) @ 400 ea. 4412@500 4410@400 L26/36 abt 200 gave the L100's to my son, so can't sell them.

Your mebbe L100's @250 + 212 for crossovers put their new cost in the middle of those ranges...L96 has a lot of followers.

Somebody asked me for a comparo of L166-4412. I answered that 51 out of a hundred times the L166 would win.

Have now gone smaller ...18Ti's with a JBL PS100 10inch powered sub ...I like that combo too.

Who makes the $212 xovers and will they make the Centurys perform? I have both L166's and 96's which I like but for me the 166's are amazing.

So I got 'em, (excellent shape, $250) the Century 100's and read alot about the various reasons why they won't sound good (xover, driver array) and yep they don't sound as good as my other JBL's. Tried a little experiment mostly aimed at helping tame the bass; I put them on low rise tilt back risers vertically with the woofer at the top. This did help, might restrict the port and turn them right side up and see what that does. If I want to install better xovers do I have to get the somewhat costly aftermarket kits or can I find a JBL 3 way xover that does improve the L100's xover shortcomings.

Guess I am confused - the way it started, the thread was about 4410s -
but the L100 [Century] is related to the much older 4310 speakers.

I got a pair of L100s in very clean shape a couple years back for about $150 -
got new grills, cleaned them up, sold them for about $600 shipped to FL -

Didn't particularly care for them - dry and dull, like the 4310s -
but nice because selling those speakers funded other gear I did like
2ch: WiiM Pro; Topping E30 II DAC; Oppo, Acurus RL-11, Acurus A200, JBL Dynamics Project - Offline: L212-TwinStack, VonSchweikert VR-4
    7: TIVO, Oppo BDP103D, B&K, 2pr UREI 809A, TF600, JBL B460
