I don't think white was ever stock. All I have ever seen are grey,black, and walnut. What year or model are you trying to replicate?
Could he be referring to the aquaplas on the woofers?

Sorry for the error, I meant grey, the paint coat applied to the cabinets that had the black fronts.

The finish was referred to as Utility Gray in the literature. Looked pretty much the same as Altec-Lansing VOT boxes so maybe some of those guys would know. Looked more like a standard gray primer than anything else, as best I can recall.
