Post Dave Brubeck Dies at 92

He's a guy who defined music during its transition from clubs to homes in the Hi-Fi era, a real icon of imagination, musicality, innovation, and style. Plus, he was married for 70 years!

I have a lot to write about him, but not now.

    The Light in the Wilderness

I pulled out the Decca double LP, Brubeck's :An Oratorio for Modern Times, circa 1968. I can still sing most of it line for line. It was a big risk for Brubeck, but it meant a lot to him, and I sure devoured it through repeated playings, plus seeing it performed "live" on Easter Sunday 1969 on B/W TV.

Sometimes when I'm in my cups, I'll sing the entire third side.

Grabbed the Time Out SACD which is always in my recently played stack and gave it a spin. Timeless. Though Dave is gone, we'll have the music forever.

My LP is long since worn out.

You got it right--I'm not sure how my post got muffed up. It was supposed to look like this:

    The Light In the Wilderness:
    An Oratorio for Today

but apparently I deleted the correct part and left the part I meant to edit. Ooops!

I heard him live at Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh with Jerry Mulligan about a hundred years ago. Got him on now. Why do these old recordings sound so damn good?

Peggy Brubeck was my journalism teacher at Santa Barbara ..she rarely mentioned her husband , and then only to say "he's a musician" (somewhat dismissively)
