    Date that D130!!

I've found an old D130 in my father's collection, but haven't been able to find too much information about them/it. Any ideas would be a huge help.

    Many thanks.

Then was it the 9th one made on that date? Just curious.

Not knowing too much about speaker repair, how much is it to re-cone/re-foam a D130? I don't think it's been touched, and I've noticed cracks along the rim of the driver.

And not to pimp myself, but my father was a great appreciator of all things JBL. That said, I've a collection of this and that - i.e. LE8T's, LE8T-H's, 3120 crossovers, etc. - and should anybody be interested in anything, I don't mind sharing a list.

    Best,

I'm sure people would be interested... if you want to sell off some or all of it, you can post it in the Market Place area.

Regarding reconing, it would be unfortunate to replace that beautiful cone with a new one. The new JBL cones are not exactly like that one, they have a cloth surround and they have a different voicecoil. If the goal is to use the driver as intended, I guess you have no option but a recone. It will be difficult to find a genuine JBL kit though as they have been out of production for some years now.

Yes, I see some tearing in the integral paper surround. Later versions if this cone "doped" the surround to forestall this and absorb some if the reflected energy (I'm not so sure it ever went to cloth). Sadly, it's basically an artifact now. Even if you could find a later kit the voice coil gap is likely too narrow for one, since some details of this driver were changed for later versions.

As I understand the "serial number" date code that Glen figured out a few years ago, 4 would indicate 1954, 08 would indicate August, and 169 was some sort of part number; it appears on many D130 labels of various ages. August of 1954 fits right in with the "early cast pot" time period. The cast pots began in late 1952 and the oval metal badges with stamped serial numbers appeared in 1956.
