Would these be appropriate for a normal sized living room? I would have to buy three and only need two so I would end up with an orphan. As you might guess, I am wifeless at the moment.

We've got a set of 4270D's at our family cabin. Same bass cabinet and HF driver I believe. Smaller horn. These are playing into a very big room with 20+ foot ceilings, and believe me they have the sensitivity and headroom to blow the back walls out with a 70 watt tube amplifier.
Very smooth, with ample bass, and highs that are extended enough that I don't feel cheated. Wonderful speakers for the money.
I've considered dropping the 4270D components into a set of old S8R cabinets to make them more presentable for a living room.
I'm curious what they're asking for the 3 speakers?
I am not sure, but I believe You are talking about 'theater series speaker 4670' ( 2 x 2225H + 2445 + 2360 ). I can imagine the use of the mentioned after some hard works on appropriated network (either on 2 or even 3-amplification with electronic network, or passive, where experience with 4350/55 or Ev2 DD66000 would be good starting point).
May be helpful:

or for 2445 only, good starting point can be L200B network :

or as our member toddalin in the post has suggested:

but for the LF section (one of the two 2225H) for the so-called "helper bass unit" some ideas in the:

where LF1 denoted 'helper bass unit",
may the rest can be as in N4671
