    Too stiff surrounds for LE10

This was stressed somewhere in the past but I can't find.

I recently refoamed 2 LE10H with foams from Rick. As usual the foams fitted perfect but....

Unlike the bigger and wider foams from Rick like the 2235 or 2214 that are very close to original, this small LE10 foam is far too stiff! Even after excessive break in (50h!) I end up with a completely different driver.

    Fs 50Hz (33)
    Qts 0,39 (0,37)
    Qes 0,41 (0,39)
    Vas 50 l (77)

This yields in a comletely different response!

Does anybody else ever had this problem? Are there other LE10 surrounds that are clother to original?

    Thanks for help.

    Hey, Guido...

Interesting post. Are the "(xx)" data from specs, or did you collect measurements from a recone? If from specs, I wonder if an aged / stiffened spider has added to your observations...? In other words, the surrounds may not bear the only blame.

Huh, I haven't run into that problem with the foam surrounds I use. Now, I've SEEN a few random "rogue surrounds" from here and there in the past, that did seem too stiff... but the current crop we've been getting, seem to be just fine. Most of the LE10s wind up with Fs in the mid-high 30s before break-in... which really, won't make that much difference in the sound. But 50 Hz?! That sucker must be twice as thick as the original! Even the bad ones from before, seemed to not have THAT drastic of an effect...

    Regards,
    Gordon.

    Hi Bo

    (xx) is from spec

    Hi Gordon

It is double as thick as the original.
I had this problem with 2 LE10A half a year before.
Where do you buy your surrounds?

Actually, now that I think about it, the surrounds I have are from a huge batch that's a few years old. It may just be that these came before some change in supplier took place?

Anyway, I don't know how much cost, mailing a set to Europe might be... but I'd be glad to send out some of mine. I've been selling the ones I have, for $25 for a set of 4 (enough to do the ever-present L77s, with PR10s and LE10s) or $7.50 each. If we can find a good mailing method (fortunately, a set of 4 surrounds in a cardboard/styrofoam flat box only weighs something like 5-7 ounces or less), I'd be glad to do this for the prices above plus whatever the mail cost is...

    Regards,
    Gordon.

    HA!

Today I measured an original LE10H. Result is the same too high fs.
Interesting is that my spec calculator comes up with a moving mass for all my 3 LE10H of 28 to 30 grams. Spec is 40 grams.

Inspecting all my 3 LE10s I could not see the aquaplas. The white coating is somwhat heavy but seems to be no aquaplas. Are there any LE10s out there without?

    Aquaplas

The white coating is the aquaplas .

How are you measuring Fs ? ( Maybe that's the problem )

    Thanks Earl!

I expected the thick layer of aquaplas like on the backside of a 128H or 2214H cone.
