Help with bass enclosure... Altec 620A or Onken?

    Hi,

I am hoping someone can help me out, please. I have a pair of Altec 511B horns with Altec 808-8A drivers, and I would like to build a pair of bass enclosures to set them on top of for a full range, two-way system. By design, I am torn between the looks of the Altec Model 17/620A and the Onken style of cabinet, though I have never heard either one. Thus, I am calling upon the experience of those who have heard either (or both) to set me in the right direction. Which cabinet would you choose and why?

Also, I haven't decided on which LF driver to get, but I am thinking something like the JBL 2226H/5H or Altec 411-8A. My main concern, of course, is the overall bass performance and synergy of the enclosure paired with the 511B's. Ultimate low frequency response is not my main goal.

Thanks in advance for any and all your advice/comments.

    Regards,

    Willy

Compare each driver's T/S parameter with each of the two cabinets you mention. Then pick the proper match.

The ALTEC 620 was designed for the 604 series.
    The Onken 360 was designed for 416 A, B or C and 515 B or C.
You must choose a speaker with the same parameters.

Onken is a vented box with just a curious port, ...

... there is no magic in the design.

Hey Willy. Perhaps you can ask around the sonic specifities of each cab to see what best fits you. Then build it with the proper driver that matches it.

    Lee, Ruediger, Stephane,

Thanks for your inputs. Stephane, based on your input regarding what driver works with what cabinet (very useful, BTW), it looks like the Onken/416-8c is the way for me to go. I still like the idea (and straight forwardness) of the 620A, however, it was designed primarily for use with the Duplex drivers, and I'm not sure how it would perform as a stand-alone bass enclosure. Besides, I prefer the aesthetics of the Onken anyway. Now, I just have to find me a good pair of 416-8C's or get a pair of the GPA equivalents...

Were you planning to crossover at 500 or 800?
