Post Got a pair of JBL L166 -- but has fiew issues...

Got a pair of JBL L166's at a estate sale priced pretty high.
These are my first pair of "L" series speakers.
There was no way to test them and did a gamble and could end up a costly gamble.
One speaker works perfectly and sound is very punchy. I watched few trailers and was feeling like in a movie hall but another one is little messed up.
One tweeter doesn't work and the woofer surround is unglued from the cone in few areas.
The surround came unglue only after playing few minutes and it doesn't appear to be rotted so re-glue could work.

The tweeter is the big issue.
Any ideas on what to check to figure out if it's the tweeter or if it has any fuse?
Also, is the tweeter unobtainum? There is not a single 066 tweeter in the auction site and ended auctions are horribly expensive. I read that 044 can be used as a replacement but would like to match if possible.
Will it help to clean the tweeter/mid controls?
Looks like I have to take the woofer out to access tweeter and controls.
It's been few weeks but haven't have time to work on it yet.
    Thank you for suggestions.

swap the tweets from cabinet to cabinet..does the problem move too ?

work the pots full arc a couple of times..sometimes just a dead spot.

066's are available ....I have a somewhat ugly spare, if it comes down to that.

L166's are worth the effort , they are one of my fave bookshelves.
Some kind of happiness is measured out in miles

    Great! Thanks for comment.
I'll first have to make sure the tweeter is indeed bad.
Will clean the pots and swap tweeters hopefully in few days and update findings.

    Hi,
I took the tweeter out and it reads open in multimeter.
The other tweeter that's working reads around 5.6 ohms.

Patience and persistence will get you an 066. You might even look for beat-up L-110's and L-150's where the 066 is still intact and sell off the rest of the parts. Sometimes, you just have to be prepared to pay the price, because that's what it costs to play (ask me how I know that! I own a Corvette and it loves biting into my wallet at irregular intervals and I just have to be happy throwing money at it!). Good luck in your search!

Not to be a wet rag, but ... 033 in L110 and L150, not 066.

4313 (and more L166) would net 066 tweets... or just look for raw drivers for sale.

I may have some really nasty looking (Functional) 066 tweeters. They are nasty looking with domes that are smashed. It is functional or I would have chucked it. Think of it as your last resort. With the grills on you won't see it. Price.......well if you can't find a replacement better than this i will need a nice playing Classic Rock LP.

Very True, I have a set of L150 and it definitely does not have the 066, though I wish it did have it. I also have a set of L166's, my first set of JBLs actually, its how my downward spiral started (or upward climb depending on how you look at it). Bottom line is they are very nice speakers and worth the expense, even if you just buy a set of 066, just keep an eye on them for a while & you'll know what they are worth.

Make sure the foam surrounds are nice and fresh ie: resilient & not dry at all otherwise refoam them, its not that hard to do, just takes a little time & patience.

Now that is a very nice price, and an even nicer gesture, always a gentleman.

Good luck & post some pictures if you get a chance.

Thank you for comments and good gesture.

    Sorry for late reply.
I got Boston Acoustics A400 few weeks ago and was busy getting them re-foamed.
Finally, got them all re-foamed and singing today.
    They are very musical.

Also, I have had some help on the tweeter from fellow AK'ers.
Now I have to go through the foam and re-apply glue if it looks okay.
