new bass cab for TAD1601b's. scoops, horns etc.

    Hey all..

Hope you're all well, haven't posted in a couple of years.

    Current setup -
    8khz+ JBL 2405 (2nd order)
    800-8khz - tad 4002 (on a 300hz tractrix)
    >800hz tad 1601 (in a bass reflex cab).

Basically, the problem is this - the output of the bass cabs is just not enough to keep up with the horns. The physical output of the cabs just isn't enough. Bass is lacking

Obviously I want to keep the quality high aswell as increase output.

Reading on the internet, it seems that the 1601b is not suitable for a front horn due to the characteristics of the drive unit- such as an A7 cab or similar. The same articles seem to reccomend a scoop for added output for this driver.

Has anyone got any real-world experience with the 1601, and getting increased output from it?

    Thanks in advance.

To add to my question -

    http://www.pioneer.eu/eur/products/4...01b/specs.html

Does anybody know if it's actually true that a TAD 1601b (see above specification) wouldn't be a good match for a front-loaded horn ?

I am purely supposing it on the following

    http://www.goodsoundclub.com/PrintPost.aspx?PostID=3969

Rather than technical understanding of what specifications of a drive unit make it suitable for different bass enclosures.

(the main goal is extra ''clout'' whilst maintaining sound quality).

If your system is multi-amped, what about simply turning the attenuators up?

The driver has a Qts of 0.31, which is a bit high for a scoop. Perhaps you could do two woofers in the same cabinet.

**edit .. just saw your post Lee.

Unfortunately these things cost me so much, I'm limited to using just the single pair and making the most out of them.

Maybe you could try to locate a set of Altec A7, of JBL 4560 empty cabinets and make some tests. You can probably get them for cheap too. What about building single woofers JBL 4550?. All the above suggested set-ups will be very efficient down to 80Hz, and will match your horns.

I thik that a front loaded horn is what you shuld be after. Not a rear loaded one with their phase problems.

yeah, my original thought was some VOTT cabs or 4560 type cabs, but the article saying the Tad 1601 isn't a good choice for this type of cab put me off.

    Maybe that's just nonsense though.

Wouldn't be the first time the internet gave me a bum steer..

I really like the A7 front loaded horn too but for a smaller cab I saw this recently..

    This is a new line of speakers, with this config. using 2x TAD 1601B, 2x 1801, 1x TAD 4003, 1x ET703

Created by SBS Designs (the owner Shorty is a member here) the line is called Annabella I believe.. looks kinda cool in red

    I like the red.

Less keen on the 'smith' horn for the TAD compression drivers.

I had a smith horn (genuine JBL ones), and really found they squashed the sound.

The mid's are in a different league with the tractrix's I've recently made.

These definately would look great on top of a TAD stuffed VOTT.

What do you mean by squashed? I am not defending the 2397 Smith horn, I know it well and it isn't perfect, but how do you feel the Tractrix horns are superior.

I find it hard to put sound into words.

The 2397 with the Tad 4002 sounded... well you could hear the horn. Frequency range was restricted, but not only that, you could ''hear the woodwork'. I can't put it in good words. It made the drive unit sound slightly cuppy, slightly nasal.

With the tractrix, it simply seems to increase volume, I can't ''hear'' the effect of the horn at all.

I hope that makes some sense (?)

I'm just about to try some TAD1601 in A7 VOT cabs.
    Currently using 515 8GHP

I will let you know how they sound (i know they sound great at low volumes, but can't turn it up yet due to not enough gasket!)

also where's the article you refer to? I am going off advice from someone who i have a lot of respect for with fitting the TADs - hope my ears agree.
