L100 Cabinet Question - Others As Well

Lately, I have seen numerous pairs on the internet and ePay with the front baffle treated as so:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4340.l2557&rt=nc&n ma=true&item=280863191867&si=sPe31MOP8%2FPoZW3X3i0 evqYQC6Y%3D&viewitem=&sspagename=ADME%3AX%3ARTQ%3A US%3A1123&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

(I don't know how to just take one of the pictures to show the point of my inquiry)

Anyway, note the preeminent groove, or channel if you prefer, where the front baffle meets the side and top panels.
I have a pair of late L100s and the front baffle is smooth all the way out to the edges, same as the L96.............along with the damn hair line, extremely fine cracks in the paint that occur over the decades there, at that joint!.............BUT, my pair has a much lower serial number?

Still close enough to these in the "auction" though (# starting with "2"xxxxx and followed with the "A" and from the "twist lock" speaker wire terminal "era". Two different cabinet suppliers? Assembly lines?

Or am I missing something obvious here?

    Thank you,
    Thomas

My L96s have the distinct groove at the baffle edge, bought in 1982.

Now that you mention it, I think mine did too; bad example then I guess.

And the L112 had the little step at the edge of the baffle due to the extra thick 1" front baffle versus 3/4", and the grille design.

I just wish I knew, don't really know why, just find it interesting.

I noticed the same thing on a set of '100's I just bought. I have 4 sets, and this is the only one like that. I asked a JBL nut about it , and he said that they were the last series they made. That is a rabbet, it's a technique used in cabinet making. I use it in all the cabs.(furniture) I make. It's basicly a step in the side, top, bottom panels that the front panel rests on. There are other ways to do this as well.Check out my post in DIY forum;"L100's in cherry". I hope this was helpfull. DrumIV

I have a pair of L100s that have that same groove, Serial # is 279***A. Not sure when they were manufactured. I've had them for about 5 years.

    IMO

Not a groove - baffle is inset from the front edges.

"Groove" only in the sense that the joint between front baffle and the rest of the box presents as such

I was thinking maybe this practice was adopted as over time almost every smooth front box I have seen eventually displays white cracking at that joint...........maybe the "groove" helps alleviate that much as it does with sections of sidewalk? An expansion joint more for cosmetic purposes?

It's clearly an extra step in the construction process so there has/had to be some reason for it?

    Thanks for your thoughts!
