Hi IWT,
Still nothing on the scope about TH4003 clones?
diyaudio.hk has started to sell some: http://www.ebay.com/itm/100-Clone-TA...-/380429077709
In fact, Now I think the LP Turntable and tonearm is more fun than TH4003.
These are TH4003 clones, not TH4001 (which he also does: http://www.ebay.com/itm/100-Clone-TA...-/270965925080 )
Here is an original one:
As for the quality of these 4003 clones I don't know, but I have heard good reviews of his 4001 clones.
I have also seen and measured IWT's 4001 horns in France and they are indeed impressive and top quality!
I wish he would do some TH4003 clones too...
I could be mistaken, but it looks to me like some of these clone TH-4003 horns are missing the AFAST system. According to TAD:
"AFAST (Acoustical Filter Assisted System Tuning) is used in the upper portion of the horn. The acoustical filter absorbs the horn's resonance to prevent sound image blurring, as a result, sound reproduction becomes much clearer."
There should be a hole in the upper part of the horn and a raised channel in the rear to accommodate the AFAST plumbing.
Personally I think: "The acoustical filter absorbs the horn's resonance to prevent sound image blurring, as a result, sound reproduction becomes much clearer."
Is a marketing dept. BS line...
I have done experiments with these horns, with actual and 4003 clones and I discovered a change in the response curve with and without the "AFAST" port. With the maple plywood factory horn the port seems necessary to flatten out the response, I found that with my much more massive and inert cast clones, adding a port that was an identical copy of the original, caused a response peak in the upper midrange.
Whatever the marketing dept. may or may not contribute to the description, it does appear that the AFAST port does do something.

Widget,
For reasons I'm sure you can appreciate, I am glad you researched the role of AFAST and decided not to go with it. Many thanks.
