2 2245H with different cones, but which one is original?

Hi there, I have just bought myself two 2245H speakers, and they are very nice cosmetically, and functionally. BUT! there seems to be a difference in the two cones visual layout.

    1. There is a different number of ribs or ripples.
    2. There is a color difference. (might be caused by light?)
    3. One dust cap looks, bumpy and... well, ugly!

What i am trying to figure out, is which one is the "real" (if any of them) cone assembly.
The darker one, needs new surrounds but if I need a new recone kit, I wouldn't bother changing the surround first.

There is black aquaplas on the back of both cones.
(The flash makes the brown foam edge appear yellow)

    old-new

top is the original cone (and original FOAM that won't last very long) with white aquaplas on the rear

bottom is th second generation 2245 recone kit with the black aquaplas on the rear

I believe there were 5 versions of this beast:

grey frame , many ribs, white aquaplas
black frame , many ribs, white aquaplas
black frame, many ribs, black aquaplas
black frame, fewer ribs, black aquaplas
same but newer push terminals / frame

post pics of the rear that shows the cones, terminals and badges.

    okay...

Okay, so according to your list, mine must be the newest and the second newest.
Both have black frame, both have black Aquaplas. only difference is foam and amount of ribs.
I think I will reform them both soon (just to keep the edges the same age) Then when it is time for a recone, I will recone them both.
here is the pics you asked for:

    best regards

at least i got them so cheap, it would still be affordable to recone both of them - luckily i know some guys at JBL europe/asia who can assist in getting the kits.
But for now, I think i will just keep the speakers and refoam the older one, so they are functional - they both sound the same, when A/B'ing so I am confident still.

The one with the new cone (now) had the VC stuck. But since it now has a new cone and you see no issues it must have been properly replaced.

    That is very good news!
I earlier decided not to replace the cones now, since they both were working and i want them to be of the same age, but If you are sure that one has been replaced, then I could just replace the other, and they would be almost of the same age.

I would like them to be identical, but since foam edges deteriorate over time, I would like them to be replaced at the same time.
But the financial dilemma of buying these and buying two new C8R2245H kits were a bit of a headache, but If I can do with one, I think I will!

So tonight I will make a request to my friend at JBL Europe/Asia, If he can source me a kit - otherwise I found one in england. (the kit's i have found in America, england, germany and Japan are all about the same price, but shipping and taxes from outside of EU is a bit of a pain, so locally is preferable.)

I understand you thought of them as junk, and if one VC was stuck, they would be junk, but I am glad about the idea of "saving" a pair of 2245H and making them up-to-spec and equal.
Furthermore the idea of having a pair of 4345 with newly reckoned 2245H's is a nice thought!
Now I just have to put my 2122 recone kits in my 2122 baskets and I am on my way!

I will make a DIY thread, when the project continues.

    best regards
    Soren

Great news I'd say If you're going to bring the second one up to spec. Would you care to share your sources of recone kits?

i have a personal friend at JBL EU/Asia, so he is my go to guy - he is currently at Harman Kardon and looking at kits in the deeper corners of the factory.
