    ECM Streaming

Apologies if there is already a thread about streaming sources. Manfred Eicher, Mr ECM, has been burned in the music streaming arena and has only one outlet, a dedicated channel on AccuRadio.

The quality is fine, IMO, for streaming. AccuRadio is free. Unlimited skips, I haven't used one yet, and the ads are almost all station ID five second spots. They are sparse.

I took your advice and setup AccuRadio. it's been going all morning with NO commercials or
    pandorka type crap.

quality is good. That damned 'Dora was throwing a lot of barf inducing crap my way , saying
"we are just trying to tune your stations by your dislikes" yeah, right .... the junk never stopped.
Then when you give a thumbs down, that automatically kicks off an ad.

It was good at one time, not no 'mo.

A DAY LATER: thx Clark, I'm really enjoying AccuRadio so far

I installed it on my Android phone this morning, listened for a few minutes and then exited the program. About half an hour later it turned itself on and soon after a Discover Card commercial started blaring through my phone's speakers. No thanks.

I don't use a smartphone, but AccuRadio works perfectly on my iPod Touch. I can leave it for days and when I click play it resumes exactly where I left off. The trick is probably to pause in the play of a song instead of letting it finish? More likely because I never exit the program, I just pause it. Idle iPods do not suck juice to speak of. I have a feeling that full ads are more targeted to smartphones than audio devices. Much larger market. I hardly ever hear more than a station ID so I assume the ad space in unsold. The ECM channel is probably not a Hot 100 listen either.

Perhaps this is more backup for my abhorrence of smartphones. I am no Luddite but I see the devices taking my friends further and further from Be Here Now. They all respond the same. "Of course it is, but I need it for work." I tell my friends to leave a phone message on my flip phone. I always get it. They can email my desktop if they are not in a hurry.

I'm just running AR on the PC thru the 120TI's ... maybe will try it on the iTouch.

No smotfone here either. MY "incommunicado time" is valuable to me.

Many places I go people have their faces buried in their phone. Traffic hazards crossing roads. Sitting in restaurants letting food get cold. Tuning out society (and parents) Is this a tech equivalent of the Hoodie ? . Parents handing fones to babies as TV substitutes.

What the hell is so damned important ??? (besides LHF) Candy Crush ? Angry Birds ? porn ?
    No thanx.

OKAY. I've been streaming Accuradio for some time now.

    1. it has a leaner sound than Pandora. Not as "full".
    2. when I give a tune 1 star, gets repeat plays anyway. (yes, I'm logged in)

Not ready to dump it yet, but anymore free streaming recommendations ?

My recommendation is based solely on the ECM channel. If it sounds better, it is probably due to ECM providing top quality sources to AccuRadio. Likewise, the modest demand for the channel means mostly unsold adds, a large variety of performances offered, and almost zero pressure to insinuate junk into your stream. Being a single label channel, and an almost monolithic-ally European Jazz channel at that, flyers are not in the picture.

No help, I know, for someone who can't stand horns! That pretty much leaves piano trios, duets and solos, with mostly skips. Few if any have a better reputation for recording quality over decades and a thousand plus titles than ECM. Streaming other music will almost always result in lower quality, thus the sound. Each streaming source will have better or poorer engineering, but GIGO will always rule.

Pandora station converts your thumbs-ups into its playlist

Known as Thumbprint Radio, a new station plays all the songs you've ever given a thumbs-up to and others like them.
