    Ces 2012

    Who's here?

I haven't gone since 1997? I managed a couple of hours today and the highlight of the day? I got to hear the TAD Reference 1's, wow what a treat!

One can believe he's doing allright in the DYI arena and then you get exposed to something like these and, well, I came home and didn't dare power up my system for an hour or two, and well, damn!
If we knew what the hell we were doing, we wouldn't call it research would we.

Oh well, you can find solace in the fact that you could sell every piece of gear you own and maybe get enough for one speaker.

    Brief CES report...

I was happily surprised to hear very good sound from a number of manufacturers. I did find one room where it hurt my ears and a few that were just plain ordinary, but unlike past years where I spent some time at T.H.E. Show listening to the varied and often weird audiophile creations from tiny vendors who often times seem to be glorified DIYers working alone in a dark room, the systems at the Venetian were for the most part well thought out, reasonably well presented, and often a joy to listen to.

Along with our own 1audiohack I enjoyed listening to the fabulous TAD systems and the great demo put on by Andrew Jones. I also heard great things at YG Acoustics, Magico, and Wisdom Audio. All four of these rooms featured systems priced in the absolute stratosphere, but at least for this money the sound was quite good. I have been in rooms in the past where some inventor/tinkerer was showcasing his new nirvana product at $50K plus and I just left scratching my head.

There was one manufacturer who I stumbled upon who was doing some very interesting work... Ocean Way Audio They are doing the type of loudspeakers that many here could relate to. Allen Sides, owner and engineer at Ocean Way knows music and is also behind this project. I had the opportunity to talk with him at length. He is producing classic studio monitors using JBL drivers as well as drivers from other companies and is hand tuning some very fine speakers. What I appreciated the most in discussing his work was that there was none of the audio mumbo jumbo pseudo-science that so many use when talking about their process. He simply builds quality speakers and carefully tunes them by ear.

What was the best bang-for-the-buck system? I admit, I wasn't looking for them, but I bet the new Performa3 series from Revel/Harman is going to be a top contender.

Wish I had know folks were there. I was stuck in the lower south hall at the LVCC working. Wish I could have slipped over to the Venetian for some tunes...

I came upon Widget's notes a bit late. Allen Sides is a protege of recording icon Bill Putnam Sr. and eventually bought all of Bill's famous recording properties including the bookend United and Western Recorders studios.

Perhaps more interesting to some on this site is that according to background history on the Ocean Way website Allen started his audio career custom-building speaker systems out of a garage in Santa Monica. He recorded his own tape source material for demos on the equipment. Over time his recording business eclipsed the speaker building enterprise. It appears Allen never lost interest in his original endeavors.

    An audio-geek DIY'er of a higher order.
