If you try just a surround first and it works, you will only pay for the surround. But if it does not work, then you would have to pay for a complete recone, which would include new surround, cone, spider, and voice coil. You run the risk of spending more money if you try just the surround first and it fails, but you also have the possibility of saving the cost of a recone if it works with the surround only.

Obviously, complete recone is best, since all would be new.
