    Hypothetical Application Question

A hypothetical question: Assuming a 2x15" woofer array, side by side, in a single box and a single horn with dual drivers.... if that arrangement was driven as stereo, would that work?

I know the LF would be stereo. Would the HF be as well, or would the left and right output just get mixed up?

No - only frequency band you could "bridge" and still have stereo would be low bass (say below 80hz ... as fed to a subwoofer). Bridge your midrange/horn material and your sound field goes flat. Even using stereo signals to twin drivers on a single horn still gives you a single point of sound ...sound stage narrows to that single horn ...

But I have to wonder what would be the point of that design?

A "mono" "stereo" "center channel" without the need to electronically mix the two channels comes to mind.

Alternatively, if we run the two channels out of phase, those parts that are common to both channels should more or less cancel out and we get the difference between the two channels. This can then be used as "synthesized rear channels" as was done in the early days of quadraphonic.

I was only curious as to it working or not. If it actually could work, I would think the savings on space might be practical for some.

If space saving is the concern, there are some mighty amazing speakers that pop up here in a quantity of 1.
Just set up a very high end mono system and have at it ...

I swear, I just don't know why people get so cranked over this surround thing ...
most musical instruments produce sound from a single point anyway ...

Most listening to musical instruments is not conducted in the home. I know that my living room cannot accomodate a 120 piece orchestra playing in the a full sized concert hall, but I can have that with some DSP processing.

Also, there are some instruments that can only be produced properly in surround, such as a Hammond through a Leslie that continuously throws sound all around the room. Even stereo does not properly reproduce a Leslie.

Ok, next time I post something in such a playful vein,
I'll be sure to put tags around it to properly identify it -
this time I figured it was blinding obvious ... oh well!
