JBL 2214h vs. JBL****

Hey,

I`m going to build a 2-way loudspeaker including 1" driver on 2344 babycheck-horn and a 12" bass/mid-driver...
The enclosure will be around 50litres...

So I though about the JBL 2214h, which I already listended to and enjoyed it very much!!
Which JBL 12" do compare to these ??
Maybe 2213, 2213h, 123-a....

The 2214H was used with a 2342 in the 4425, with a 1200Hz crossover frequency.
One of its advantages over 128H, 2213H and others is that the cone is much deeper, making it easier to time alignment with the horn.

Besides time-alignment, how does the 128H compare ??


Is it as acurate and punchy as the 2214h or is it a softer, less dynamic speaker ?

Which one does the bottom end nicer ?

I have had the opportunity to compare the 128H in a pair of 4412 and the 2214H in a pair of 4425. I prefered the 4412 ("punchier" sound I would say).
I did not listen to the woofers in isolation so I cannot exactly say if the preference was due to the woofers. The 128H is only used to 800Hz in the 4412, whereas the 2214H is asked to go to 1200Hz in the 4425.
The 2214H appeared to have more solid bass than the 128H (the 4425 is a bit bigger than the 4412, which could explain why)

If you are considering the 2344 time alignment is a very important aspect.

Another woofer you could consider is the newer 252G (similar cone depth as the 128H tho).

Member edgewound had a pair of 1200H/1200C for sale a short time ago. It was used in the 4425 MkII to 1200Hz and in the Century Gold. He might still have them available. I think this is the 12" to have for your project, and I suggest you send him a PM.

The 128H and the 2214H are very similar except for the obvious cone difference. I've built a lot of systems with both and prefer the 128H, hands down. It produces better bass in a smaller box whereas I found the 2214 rolls off rather quick unless a SB4 alignment is used. I've completed a set of speakers with 2214H drivers that I compromised on the box volume at 2.5 cu ft. A QB3 alignment was 1.7 but the rolloff was around 50 hz.

Naturally if you can find newer drivers that might be the way to go, these old drivers are getting hard to find and expensive to repair.
