    3105 Network Surgery

    Hi!

The low output on my 3105 network just stopped working. Driver and and external wiring is good. So, it looks like something inside the 3105 is at fault.

So what's the best way to open these up. There's two screws that appear to hold the back cover on, but I know there's wax on the coils that my be attached to the sides. I've seen where someone on the web had drilled out the four rivets on the aluminum back plate. That seemed destructive.

Anyone worked on these? Just don't want to do anymore damage than I have too.

Anything I can test on the unit before opening?

That generation of JBL crossover are notorious for the screws that hold the push terminals on to loosen up. Are the push terminals on the outside securely fastened? If they are the least bit loose, the ring lug on the inside will lose contact and cause the connection to go intermittent or fail. Normally there are two pop rivets on each side holding it together. Drill those out and the back plate should separate from the can. Just go easy on the separation since there will be solid copper wires from the various components attached.

    sguttag!

I'll get the drill out and go to work.

You might be right about the lugs. I'll test the caps while in there.

    Thanks!

    Note,

If they are not completely loose, you can often tighten them up from the outside with enough turns. It will, at least, let you know that is all that is wrong with the unit.

When I put them back together, I don't use pop rivets and instead tap the holes and use button head screws so it can be disassembled easier the next time.

The patient has made a full recovery!!!

Screw was loose on the red (non-common) binding post. Fifteen minutes to reassemble and install.
