Altec 1" exit driver recommedations

Hi

I have the opportunity to buy a pair of Altec 802-8g in good shape.

I thought I would get a pair of Altec drivers in order to compare with my JBL drivers (2420, LE85, etc), should I go for this pair or wait for another? I have no knowledge about Altec stuff whatsoever :-)

I am planning to use them from 2,5 kHz all the way up. HiFi use in big room playing loud.

802G Has new radial phasing plug, improved magnet structure. Originally equipped with very light diaphragm. Improved overall performance, last Alnico magnet.

804A Small magnet version of 802C, 2 db less sensitive. Used extensively in Hi Fi and other loudspeakers. Green in color.

806A New designation of 804A driver, green color.

802 G is the "best" Altec alnico driver, I'll go for it.

all over the board,
i see cores going for $200 to 300/pr frequently
but have also seen them as low as $45/pr

I'll take all of the 802g's I can get for less than $100/driver.

I am using a pair of them in a DIY Altec MLTL build. They are coupled to 811 horns. The ones I have, have the original "light" aluminum 'phrams. They compare well to other CD's I've heard, the 811 horn being somewhat of a limit to their performance. I plan to move to another horn as time permits.

If you can get them for a good price and are able to somewhat document their past use, they are worthy. About the only caveat is how they were used but a remag and new 'phrams is still possible through Great Plains Audio.
