Just bought a freshly reconed 2226h and...

I just purchased a freshly reconed 2226h for dirt cheap with the intention of removing the recone and fitting a 1500GTi cone kit. Basically, I paid a high price for what should serve as a bare basket.

But that recone on that 2226h looks pretty darn good. The dome has a perfect bead of glue (obviously a professional or highly talented reconer) and the back of the cone has the usual hand written JBL script with the part # sticker. I checked on the net and my driver has exactly the same cone as one the picture below. Therefore it looks very much like I have purchased a freshly reconed 2226h with a genuine c8r2226 kit... for $80.00

My question is: does the picture show a genuine C8R2226 ?

Yup, it looks like a genuine kit, the handwriting, the sticker, the black machine marks on the VC former, the spacer and the glue looks like the real stuff.

    Yes.

That's a great deal for you. The parts cost more than that.

It was good deal indeed. And unexpected. About $160 for a recone kit and $40 for a basket. And I didn't have to spend an hour prepping a basket.

BTW I played the 2226 and the 2225 side-by-side in separate bass reflex enclosures. The 2225 seems to have more bottom end and the 2226 has more midbass. I suspect it needs to be equalized to chop off some of that upper bass.

They look pretty similar but hearing is more revealing than curves on paper.
Do they have the same sensitvity?

    T/S

The 2225 does sound better and has a bit more bass than the 2226. I prefer the '25 in most of the non-road cabinets and small systems.

When the 2226 came out it was specifically mentioned that they could drop into existing tuned boxes that used the 2225 BUT the numbers on the T/S specs show differently. I have always believed this to be a compromise that the guys at JBL were stuck with.

However more here, less there and change over there means the "average" box wouldn't need retuning.

    BTW I have an orphan 1500GTI ( 8 ohm version I think ) sitting on a shelf....

The extra mid bass makes the 2226 sound slightly louder. On paper, they are the same.

    2225 is 97db, weight 22.5lbs
    2226 is 97db, weights 19.25lbs

But it doesn't say at which frequency.

    drip drop

WR = weather resistant. Standard treatment on paper cones for all touring / outdoor app cones. I did it to all the cones back in the beer/club days.

Is it possible that once the new surround and spider have broken in, the 2226 should provide a little more low end?? Compare again after another 100 hours?

This is a possibility. But for having installed lately two 2225h that were just reconed, I don't think there will be much bass to be gained. I just think that the 2226 is a bass reflex driver that needs some good equalization. Many people will put the 2226 in a horn but I wouldn't do that myself.
