    Altec 515/288 speaker?

Does this look intriguing or is it just weird?

Perhaps they were simply too awkward to be practical.

After looking at the photos again I think that it's a hoax and that I'm simply that gullible.

That's the duplex "Engine", used in the 9864-8A !

That coax is meant to be loaded into a modified 816 horn-cabinet .

It was a real product for a short time .

Given a demand, I assume that GPA would build them up again .

    See,,, not that gullible .

Heard em' and the sound absolutely fantastic! Nice duplex design and the large horn makes them sound awesome. Used in large arenas and gyms (of substantial size) as they were very efficient.

Heard them in a hi-fi setup. Guy made a metal horn mount so you could mount the speaker in a bass reflex cabinet. 515 woofer, 291 drivers. (Replace the frams to all aluminum, and you know have a 515/288 duplex speaker)...It was very very good sounding. Smooth and pleasant to the ears, so I thought I think he was rolling with a 500hz 2nd order crossover with zobel on woofer and notch filter on the hi freq section.

As EarlK noted, used for short time, But indeed a read product.

I would think a great way for someone to get 515/288 sound, especially oversea dudes.

    GPA 212 8a

Great Plains Audio is still building a 12 based on that concept, with a smaller horn.
I bet they could put the larger horn on if you asked nicely.

    Supposed to be very nice
    I think Bill designed these.
