Hi,

Does anybody know something about the LE 10A
Bass driver ?
Bought a pair on Ebay (like new).
What do you get from this in what size of enclosure ?
Is it possible to combine it with an LE 85 ?

Frequently mentioned throughout the fhreads here, they are a favorite of several regulars. Use the search function so see what has been said.

Consider replacing the foam surrounds if they are old, cracked or stiff, to restore full bass response.

I don't think I'd mate them with LE85's. A vintage mate for them would be LE20, as in L77, the S11 system, or make a three-way as suggested above by others....

Yes, the LE20 & LX11 work as do the LE21H & LX14. I think the cheaper L40 makes for a better 2-way though. One might want to try an 033 with the LE10A... that's a combination I don't recall ever trying...

I dunno. It's hard for me to get past the percieved bass boominess of an L40, to judge if its midrange is "higher fidelity" than the L77.

To me, the L77 and the L26 sound a lot better... as in subjectively "faster" and more dynamic... than the L40 or L56. Dunno if JBL just went to a more "smily face" voicing on the later models (the "disco" sound) or if it's something in the drivers that changed along the way...

I think one thing that might make the L77 "better" in the mids, is its use of the passive radiator. No port for midrange "talk" noise to come out of!!

The LE10 with the 033 sounds like an interesting idea. Maybe starting out with an L56 crossover as an initial trial topology? Given that JBL oftentimes used the LE10A without ANY crossover (ie, the L77), it would seem that the simple woofer crosover in the L56 network might be a better match than the steeper circuit in the L40 network (which would be the other alternative that came to mind)...

Yes! Since you brought it up, I would look at the N56 filter for sure.

The bass boom you speak of concerning the L40 was indeed real and definitely something the L77 didn't have. My mention of the L40 as the better 2-way is based primarily on my perception that the 033 was a better HF than the paper cones. The 125/127 was definitely no LE10!

I did prefer the L77 to the L66 and I would like to imagine that was due to the PR10. Frankly, back then, it could have been simply because I thought the L77 looked better.
