    Thoughts on doping LE5-2 midrange

Has anyone tried applying some kind of doping to their LE5-2 midrange?

I did the center caps on my L123A woofers as part of my L100 restoration (http://www.audioheritage.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?30368-Newbie-JBL-L100-restoration-and-upgrade) project and they look really good IMHO. I used the "wet look" paint from Parts Express.

Just wondering if it would have any negative effects on the sound, the LE25 tweeter I did out of necessity (had to pull the dome out) doesn't sound any different.

Back in the day, I used to use real cellulose dope, the stuff you'd put on model airplanes. It's probably illegal now, like most of the good chemicals, it used to stink the place out.

Most here are pretty strict about adding coatings and such- they're heritage guys (never mind that the heritage has been officially flushed by harman). Nothing wrong with that, but most will tell you to get a different mid rather than contaminate a lovely LE5-2.

I'd start slow with doping it, "Wet Look" is pretty heavyweight stuff and likely would be a 'lil much. Part of what's nice about the LE5 is the extended bandwidth to work with. Try using a diluted PVA glue per my article- that will suppress a taste of the top end ringing without giving up too much. You can always add more later.
