Great singer, Peter. She has a terrific vibrato.

Maria Pia De Vito is my favorite singer that I am aware of. Being a Jazz head myself, she is a Jazz singer of course, of the European experimental sort. Unlike most singers, Ms Fischer included, she prefers other vocal modulations to standard vibrato.

Another great voice, always overlooked because she was a pop singer. Laura Branigan had a vibrato I have never heard equaled. It was very rapid and she could produce it over her entire vocal and dynamic range. That would have been a four octave range. I heard her state in an interview that she idolized Edith Piaf, but I think Laura developed a more tasteful, more flexible vibrato than Piaf. Kind of like the Beach Boys wanting to sound like The Four Lads but overshooting the mark to the good side. Laura tragically died in 2004 of a brain aneurysm.

Never mind Michael Jackson or even James Brown. The most exciting vocal performance I ever saw on TV was Laura, in a long black dress, singing several songs on a late night show (maybe the Tonight Show?). A bonus, she was SO physical, leaning down to reach a low mike and still dancing all the time. She actually worked up a sweat.

How I found Tarja Turunen

Recently we drove home on the Autobahn and we were astonished about the traffic which was supprisingly heavy for that time of the day. And we saw a lot of cars with nationalities from outside Germany which are normally seldom to see here. Then we realized a lot of cars with

W * O * A

on their back window. And then we got it, Wacken Open Air was coming up!

It is has been the biggest Heavy Metal open air festival on earth and it takes place less than 50 km off from where we live. As my son used to go there I googled for Wacken looking for what might be going on. I stumbled about this and that and it ended up with

NIGHTFISH

which is a symphonic metal band from Finland. Their last concert with Tarja Turunen

“End of an Era”

they had given in Helsinki, Finland 2005 and is available on DVD.

Tarja is a finnish soprano and she studied singing at Sibelius Academy and Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe. - Oh what a voice! Oh what a concert!

Nightfish played at Wacken in 2013 with their latest singer Floor Jansen, Netherlands, who is a great performer as well. This concert “Showtime, Storytime” has been released on Bluray. You can watch it on YouTube:

Tarja used to sing with Nightwish until a 'personality conflict' with the other band members forced her to pursue other avenues for artistic career. I agree with you -- Tarja has an absolutely GORGEOUS voice. She always delivers a good show. I encourage everybody to see one of her live performances; you won't soon forget it!

The Mass No. 2 in E minor, by the austrian composer Anton Bruckner is a setting of the mass ordinary for eight-part mixed choir and wind band (2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets and 3 trombones) was first created in 1866. About one hundred years later later our music teacher rehearsed this piece of music with our school choir acompanied by organ. As far as I remember the soprano sang like angels.
The setting is divided into six parts.

1. Kyrie – Ruhig Sostenuto, E minor
2. Gloria – Allegro, C major
3. Credo – Allegro, C major
4. Sanctus – Andante, G major
5. Benedictus – Moderato, C major
6. Agnus Dei – Andante, E minor veering to E major
   With the part „Agnus Dei“ this piece of art fades away like a prayer for peace.

I usually favor contraltos, but this is one coloratura I have long admired. Give me some credit, I first heard her on Rhapsody and was won over before I knew what she looked like. I have heard her sing in most of the usual languages but I believe she is French. The second song would have made a fan of me if I had never heard anything else from her.
