I have a vintage 1964 Vibroverb that I bought at a pawn shop a couple years ago. I got a good deal, but still had to shell out some bucks. It appears that someone replace the orig. speaker with a 1968 Jensen. I want to replace it with a period correct JBL D130F. The date code on the amp is January 1964. Was wondering if anyone out there could tell me what serial number would correspond to late 63 or early 64 JBL D130F, and the general cosmetics to look for?
Can't tell you anything about the serial number on the optional JBL but when I had my Vibroverb I put an orange Fender JBL in it and loved it. It was from a later date but I really wanted that orange in there. I think I stole it out of a two 15 fender cab that was for a bassman or something (this was about 20 years ago so memory is a little fuzzy).
Similar to this but 15" and mine wasn't all orange I don't think, this one is a 12.

Don't know serial numbers, but you're doing right by getting the right speaker. I'm not sure it would make much difference, sonically, what era it was from.
The gold-label D130Fs are more common, and earlier chronologically, than the orange label ones. For your amp, you probably want the gold label. The orange label came about in the late '60s, IIRC, and the orange frame was later still.
I'm trying to kill two birds with one stone with this. 1: I'm replacing the speaker with a JBL cause I think it would sound better and 2: collectibility, thus a period correct speaker from JBL. (By the way I wouldn't really kill a bird, unless I was really hungry and there wasn't a Chick-Fil-A around). I found a JBL D130F on ebay just now:

It appears to be a gold label to me, but not sure. I wonder if the markings on the cone are from the factory when it was reconed. ? It reads: JBL Pro 21, and also 76070.
If collectibility is your goal, it might be just as well to hold out for one that hasn't been reconed.
At the very least, find one with the proper curvilinear smooth (non-ribbed) cone.

No ridges on the cone, with this foilcal.
so 8 ohms is correct? Also, do you think it's possible to find one with the original cone that won't sound tired?
I did see one in 1964 & it had gold label D130F in it.
The first one you posted was reconed with a E140 cone, would make a good bass speaker.
Currently the there is a slim selection on eBay for D130F. I have seen betters ones is the past.
Yes, there are still a lot of original D130F speakers out there in good shape.
They made tons of those things. I'm sure they're still floating around-- just gotta have a little patience.
