Cabinet oil

Where can I find original cabinet oil?
When I grew up my father had a studio in the basement and I remember the smell in the room from JBL and tapes , I liked it

I have some XPL speakers with oiled cabinets and they need new oil but I don´t want to spoil the nice smell

Read up on the XPL series in the JBL product library .

You'll want to establish if the XPL series has a Lacquer Based ( or Oil Based ) finish before proceeding .

Three common oils used on wood are Watco Danish Oil, boiled Linseed oil and Tung Oil. I am positive there are others, but I think any of those would work, but may not smell the same as either your dad or JBL used. Both are readily available at hardware, woodworking, paint or home improvement stores. I would guess JBL use Danish oil, but it's a WAG.

I used a product called "Swedish Oil" but not sure it's still available - probably just a blend.

Skilled cabinet finishers swear by tung oil (from the chinese tung tree):

If anyone is using the aforementioned 'drying oils' like tung, linseed, Danish or Swedish oils, please dispose of your used rags, brushes, rollers or other applicators in a metal can outside of any building. When these oils dry, they generate significant levels of heat, and the applicators can spontaneously start a fire.

Good tip on the disposal of applicators. I've taken mine and put them is ziplock bags of water and trown them away. I figure they aren't going to dry out under those conditions and it should be safe.

The Danish, Sweedish and Tung oils will all have some urethane in them. If the speakers have the original JBL oiled finish (no lacquer), it will be the Boiled Linseed and turpentine recipe. Nothing stinks like turpentine, yuk.

I’m specially looking for the oil with the right smell, I still can feel it from the speakers after all these years.

I asked my father and he said it was some special oil from JBL. He used it when he was working at a company that repairing JBL drivers.

I will follow the instructions on the pictures and see what i get.

I post an update when it’s done but i think it will take some time because it’s quite busy in the company right now.
