    Tweeter To Go With JBL2123

I would like to come up with a design using the JBL 2123 10" mids and 2226 15" woofers that I have lying around. Does anyone have a suggestion for an easily obtainable (either current production or not too rare used) tweeter to use with these drivers? Preferred crossover would be around 3KHz. Doesn't have to be JBL. Doesn't have to be true horn, but given that the 10" mid will be beaming quite a bit, should have controlled directivity.

Cross the 2123 over at about 1.5K and use either a 100x100 CD Horn or Waveguide. A 90x50 would work if you wanted to limit the vertical dispersion. You want the directivity to match at the crossover point between the 10" mid and the horn/waveguide. I have used both a 2344 with a 1" 2426 and a PTH1010 PT Waveguide with a 1 1/2" 2435 and have had excellent results with both. They are both 100x100 which sounds very natural in my room. Get the driver spacing tight so the 2123 is as close to the horn/waveguide as you can.

This is good advise! I wouldn't cross the 2123 over much above 1.5K. I tried higher and always ended up backing down to around 1.2K. I've heard that B&C makes some nice 1" drivers that extend up pretty high. I prefer JBL but it's hard to ignore other options especially for the price.

I going to use a LE175 with mine.

Remember that the 2123 has high sensitivity, with a horn and driver you are usually OK.

Thanks for all the responses, especially Robh's picture, but which combo horn/driver is it? I initially wanted to get one driver to cover 300Hz to 3KHz, and I figured that would be easier on tweeter selection, but I guess I will lower my crossover point.

You might also consider the 2342. I can scarcely tell a difference from the 2344. I like the scale of the 2342 better with the 2123 if nothing else, and they are still available new.

You wont have to worry about delay differences with the 2344 / 2123, the 2342 is a tick ahead but I can't hear it. The 2020/2344 (currently in use) is the most work of the bunch, but,,,

I'm still working out my favorite combination

Good idea might be easier to get as well. I see you like Baby Butt cheeks of all sizes. I still like mine as well.

    That's a PTH1010 Waveguide using 1 1/2" 2435's compression drivers.

Yeah I do like them. I have the Bertha Butt cheeks (2360's) as well, they are all pretty hard to beat in my book.

Trade ya set of clean 2404 (no diaphragms) for a set of those 2123 you're hoarding!

Nice use of foam and neoprene on the baffle!

Hi Jeff, I am currently in 2404 surplus, what I am looking for currently is one more 2227 and 2405's of course. If you really need 2123' I'll count and get back to you.

Nice use of foam and neoprene on the baffle!
Thanks! If only it were true. The 2342 enclosure is just black spray paint over MDF. The other 2344 / 2123 and the E130 enclosures are coated with Zolatone, America used it to coat the cargo compartments of our cars and, well,, I am a car guy. It's easy anyway, just not beautiful.

The 2020? It's been in about a month now, I swept it quick for delay and ballance, crossed it in at 400Hz and out at 1300Hz (same as the 2123)with no EQ yet. I am just listening so far and I am quite pleased.

    Audiohack,
Is that like the rearend urethane truck spray Zeibart does as well? Looks good, how did the little rubber pieces seal with the 2404?

Or did you have to remove them under the 2404 to get a better seal?

I really don't know what its made of, it is kind of squishy for a while. Only the 2344 with the 2020 is actually in the enclosure and it's sealed with neoprene tape, the rest are open in back as the 2123 box is so small, so as long as they don't rattle I didn't worry, I screwed'em down and let'em rip.

All the cone drivers are "O" ringed.

If you think about selling a pair of 2202's please give me a shot at them.

    Thanks,
    Barry

Interesting combination and almost identical to the first idea I had for the surrounds in my system. I built a rough mock up of it some time ago using a pair of old PA bass cabs, some small rectangular boxes for the mids and the WG propped on top. Driver combination was the 2225, 2123 and a B&C DE250 on the 90x50 JBL PT WG's (rectangular screw on one's - forget model #) Zilch sent me, all active with a DCX2496 crossing LR24 at 300 and 1700Hz IIRC. Even thrown together like this they sounded excellent and a bit of time adjusting them would have yielded even better results I'm sure. This was a 'proof of concept' test only.

The 2226, 2123 combo is great and there are a few options for affordable HF; any of the JBL PT WG's, the QSC WG's or the 18Sound XT1086 for the flare and a good CD, of which there are several possibilities. I have used the Beyma CP 380M (I have been told the 385 is the same driver in neo), the B&C DE250 and DE25 (discontinued), and the 18Sound ND1090 and would recommend all of them. I've also used some BMS drivers, but not the 1" units and would recommend them for consideration based upon may good reports.

A far more expensive option for the HF would be the Beyma TPL150H.
