from IMDB ..
"In a remote mountain village, the teacher must leave for a month, and the mayor can find only a 13-year old girl, Wei Minzhi, to substitute. The teacher leaves one stick of chalk for each day and promises her an extra 10 yuan if there's not one less student when he returns. Within days, poverty forces the class troublemaker, Zhang Huike, to leave for the city to work. Minzhi, possessed of a stubborn streak, determines to bring him back. She enlists the 26 remaining pupils in earning money for her trip. She hitches to Jiangjiakou City and begins her search. The boy, meanwhile, is there, lost and begging for food. Minzhi's stubbornness may be Huike and the village school's salvation. Written by <[email protected]> "

They don't trust him and he loathes them but they decide he can help them with one last bank job." Written by Jeremy Perkins <[email protected]>

Cinema chains dimming movies "up to 85%" on digital projectors
The Boston Globe reports that AMC, National Amusements, and Regal cinema chains are leaving 3D projector lenses on for 2D movies. This means that the projected image is polarized and far dimmer than it should be. The chains won't acknowledge that they're doing it, but one quoted insider says its an "unspoken" corporate policy.
Given that your HD TV set shows it just fine, and your living room doesn't smell of weaponized butter, aren't they driving customers to piracy? Try this for irony: one reason operators hate changing lenses is reportedly because of crippling DRM on Sony's digital projectors, which "will shut down on you" if a mistake is made when resetting the system. So, they just don't change them, because serving a ruined product is better than serving no product at all.

just watched "The International"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0963178/
had never heard of it, had somehow popped up on some related search , and had Clive Owen , whom I had enjoyed from the BMW "Hire" series and also from "Greenfingers" and "Croupier"
have no hokey waterfalls, no analysis of the colors ... just story and acting
Clive seems always good , co-stared Naomi Watts and a generally good cast ...a thriller involving evil banks ...well thought-out and filmed
There is a long shootout scene in the Gugenheim museum that looks absolutely real, but the DVD extras show the life size mockup (but only floors G,1,2 then tore down to rebuild & shoot scenes on 3,4,5)
not great/ memorable , but if you can get it free from the library....certainly worth considering .
more: looking at the attached poster is funny ...Watts wasnt even in the entire museum scenes , but she's standing behind Clive on the poster...

Alec Leamas, a British spy is sent to East Germany supposedly to defect, but in fact to sow disinformation. As more plot turns appear, Leamas becomes more convinced that his own people see him as just a cog. His struggle back from dehumanization becomes the final focus of the story. When You're Strange: A Film About The Doors (2010)
Okay, I'll preface this as YES, a longtime DOORS fan here. If you are one too, then this is something new and kinda cool ...for all you 9.1 fans out there ...its reconstituted MONO
Depps narration was flat AND boring ... the film did show some clips from Jims movie HWY.
My library had this and yours may too

here's a snippet from HWY where Jim is driving his Shelby GT-500 and listens to the radio announcement of his own death

Hi Tom,
I saw it on PBS' American Masters series a while back and liked it fine but I agree about Depp, he's a good enough actor but I dont like him narrating.
Sometimes (when pressed for time) I take out audio books from the library and they had an unabridged copy of Keith Richards biography (auto or otherwise) and was really looking forward to checking it out but then I realized depp did the narration & put it back on the shelf real fast. Ever since he did his first pirates of the caribean movie & was inspired by Keith I think he somehow thinks he's as cool as Keith or perhaps thinks he is in fact Keith...He most certainly is NOT.
A frind of mine showed me this very interesting interview of Jim's Dad & his sister.

So I Married an Axe Murderer.....not what you would think of from the title, has a great Bay City Rollers tune in it and a totally smokin bagpipe version of Rod Stewart's If you think Im sexy plus some cool spoken word put to jazz.

BLOOD SIMPLE
the first of the Coen Bros. movies shows fantastic maturity for a debut effort ....great casting, filming , much suspense and a soundtrack that is clear , appropriate and adds to the scenes.....a true gem from the 80's.

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The debut film of director Joel Coen and his brother-producer Ethan Coen, 1983's Blood Simple is grisly comic noir that marries the feverish toughness of pulp thrillers with the ghoulishness of even pulpier horror. The story concerns a Texas bar owner (Dan Hedaya) who hires a seedy private detective (M. Emmett Walsh) to follow his cheating wife (Frances McDormand in her first film appearance), and then kill her and her lover (John Getz). The gumshoe turns the tables on his client, and suddenly a bad situation gets much, much worse, with some violent goings-on that are as elemental as they are shocking. (A scene in which a character who has been buried alive suddenly emerges from his own grave instantly becomes an archetypal nightmare.) Shot by Barry Sonnenfeld before he became an A-list director in Hollywood, Blood Simple established the hyperreal look and feel of the Coens' productions (undoubtedly inspired a bit by filmmaker Sam Raimi, whose The Evil Dead had just been coedited by Joel). Sections of the film have proved to be an endurance test for art-house movie fans, particularly an extended climax that involves one shock after another but ends with a laugh at the absurdity of criminal ambition. This is definitely one of the triumphs of the 1980s and the American independent film scene in general. --Tom Keogh

OK..I like the Coens and Jeff Bridges too , BUT .........this was worth what I paid to rent it (free from the library) . Sound was fine ...everything tech was ok ....the dialogue was stilted, (I'm glad I had subtitles turned ON) , waayyy too many night scenes in the dark , I had no clue what was happening.
The new Mattie was good , but I'd only give this a 6 of 10 rating.
Blood Simple , the prior reviewed movie and the CB's first was much more enjoyable.
still to be viewed : How the West was Won (no name cast , but ??)
and Burn After Reading.
the preview for Super 8 did look like a DVD I may track down

we watched this oldie again yesterday , sure, it's low brow , slapstick ,etc. , but it sure is funny , and is a huge cast of Hollywood faves.
sound ? MONO
picture quality ? very good (Cinerama)
story ? cornball, but fitting
Jonathon Winters & Phil Silvers were especially "over the top" (and Edie Adams slit skirt/long legs were nice too)
Lennie Pike (JW): "*Everybody* has to pay taxes!- Even businessmen, who rob and cheat and steal from people everyday, even *they* have to pay *taxes*!"

It was a dark and rainy day , so I stayed home and worked on the house. Did so good that treated myself to a movie that I'd heard about for quite a while. Had forgotten it, but late last month in prep for Halloween , the local counter-culture newspaper recommended it, and that got me going again.
Nosferatu (released 1922)
color ? Nein. B&W. (well not really ...it is tinted Black&Red for sunrise/sunsets , Black&Blue for night scenes , Black&Orange for day scenes)
Sound ? Nein. It's a silent film. There are 2 soundtracks to choose from. I preferred the traditional. This film will give your sub & center a rest, tho it's modern stereo.
Story ? A rip off of Dracula
"The film, shot in 1921 and released in 1922, was an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, with names and other details changed because the studio could not obtain the rights to the novel (for instance, "vampire" became "Nosferatu" and "Count Dracula" became "Count Orlok"). Stoker's heirs sued over the adaptation, and a court ruling ordered that all copies of the film be destroyed. However, one print of Nosferatu survived, and the film came to be regarded as an influential masterpiece of cinema."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nosferatu
Scarey ? Naw (but ,the movie was banned in Sweden due to excessive horror. The ban was finally lifted in 1972)
Memorable ? For sure ..
SW's rating = 9/10
It is the first of my new silent trifecta ..next up is "Battle Ship Potemkin" and then the remastered and re-soundtracked "Metropolis"
Nosferatu is now in the public domain and you can watch the whole thing on YouTube, but it's a non-colored fuzzy image w/o the soundtrack. The Kino version seems to be the one to get.
