Excellent guitar work. But it was the swan song of Paul Kossoff. He was only 25 at the time of his death. Also he had a huge "Nantucket Sleighride".......

These two LP's are the legacy of Paul Kossoff. On side B, C and D all tracks are previously not issued versions. Interesting for fans as me for a snowy weekend. Rock music history. Thanks for the tip to Speakerlabfan! Hey, what is a speakerlab?

Nice, I have The Band Played On album but had not seen that later Kossoff records.
Ok - sorry if this is too much information: Speakerlab was a HiFi outfit started in Seattle in 1971 by a Boeing engineer, selling kits and fully assembled speakers. They designed many of their drivers & speakers but also leveraged a lot of existing designs such as the Klipschorn. It was a very affordable way to get in to audio, and they had a trade-in program - so I started out with their speaker kits in high school in the early 70s and worked my way through the product line. Great memories, especially hanging out in the listening room at their store.

The Youngbloods - Sunlight
(1971, RCA)
a compilation of tracks from earlier Youngblood albums. I'm listening in the basement system while working on a speaker project.
Spinning with an Elac Miracord TT w/ Stanton 681EEE cartridge, fully automatic. Nice.

I have an RL/RL of this album buried in an unsorted box. I listened to the 4 track tape this afternoon - great dynamics and low frequencies on the Akai deck. ...Whole Lotta Love is a thrill.
I keep hoping it will get better as the years go by, but I still suffer from overexposure to this and most of the LZ records.

Various Artists - Blues In Concert
(1973, Groove Merchant) Bell Sound sf in the deadwax
2 LP package of live concerts. Side 4 is two 10+ minutes tracks of Richard Groove Holmes, organ & Leon Cook, guitar.
Mr. Groove & Mr. Cook live up to their names!

Are such kind of 4 track tapes still in sale? I have never seen this official kind of tape in Switzerland. Why 4 tracks? My "tape times" were in the seventies. After that there were the cassette tape decks. Some of this equipment still remains somewhere in the attic. I fear, those drive rubberbands may be rotten during the last 30 years......Led Zep 2 was a vulcano eruption. We used to dance to "Whole lotta love" at many saturday evening parties. Funny times then.....But today there is an overkill of Led Zeppelin reissues, remastering and recovering of curious lost tracks in the last two years. There are no surprising tracks to recover anymore. Robert Plant knows....Jimmy Page was a great innovative guitar player in the seventies. But in the last years he was the "master of hypes". Commercial overkill IMHO. But young people look at this the other way. See my next post concerning the new reissues of Led Zep LPs on CD.

Remastered plus unreleased studio outtakes. Don't expect too much. There's a booklet with some fine pictures but (typically for Jimmy Page) with a minimum of informations. And it's always the same old story with the booklet texts: you need a electron microscope to be able to read it!
The companion CD contains a version of "Whole lotta love" with Robert Plant's voice experiences. What shall we expect from a backing track of "Thank you" and "Living loving maid" without Robert Plant's vocals? Its only a bone without any meat left on it. It's a soup without any salt in it. It's only a selection of work in progress.
Concerning the remastered original LP on CD1: Eddie Kramer did a good job in 1969, so I like the sound of my vinyl LPs......
There are only some bare bones left of the dinner. The magic has gone. It's high time for Jimmy Page to go to the studio with some young fresh musicians.

Interesting because of the fantastic live recording of the concert at Olympia, Paris, October 10, 1969. It was first broadcast on French radio, November 2, 1969 on Europe 1 (musicorama program). They were fresh and young. Sorry Robert, your sirene voice was a little nuance too high...... (En 1969 les francais aimaient les chansons de Jacques Brel, Johnny Halliday, Serge Gainsbourg (!!!) and Gilbert Becaud. Ils tous chantent avec des voix tres bas).

The alternate mix of killer song "Immigrant song" doesn't bring any revolutionary knowledge or expansion of consciousness to anybody in the whole world. Let's leave this song in the original form as it was meant to be in 1970! We should not turn every stone. Interesting guitar work on "Jennings farm blues" but without any vocals. "Key to the highway" was too uncommercial for 1970: fine acoustic guitar work. But the sirene voice of Robert Plant didn't fit together with this traditional blues song of Big Bill Broonzy.

Don't expect too much from the companion disc. The booklet brings a minimum of informations in dwarf writing. Jimmy Page is a minimalist. This would have been the best possibility to immortalise this monument of music work. But obviously everything is said about this one......There is no more meat at the bone. Put your vinyl original or reissue on the turntable and enjoy! What do you think about this companion disc?

Where is the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio today? IMHO the companion CD with alternate mixes and so-called "important discoveries" is a media hype. Robert Plant was right as he took distance of this remastering series. Everything is said and done so far....What is your opinion?

What a shame: 3 years later Groove Holmes prefered to play synthesizer. So he produced cheap easy listening music and disco junk. Though he had the best studio musicians at his side on this one: especially all the studio cracks from "Stuff" plus John Faddis.
Only one track is acceptable: track A4 "Non kulu leku" with swinging hammond organ playing. Track B4 Ellingtons "Caravan" is simply unbearable.

Thanks to Speakerlabfan for the tip. Because of Felix Pappalardi, the ingenious producer. See one of my last posts concerning Mountain's "Nantucket Sleighride". Special kind of beautiful music: soft and sensual, crazy and funny, downhome country or city slick (cit.:back cover lyrics by e.g.)
US dynagroove pressing with superb dynamics.
