John Cage, Steve Reich - Three Dances & Four Organs
(1973, Angel/Capitol) MASTERED BY CAPITOL Jay in the deadwax; mastered by Jay Maynard at Capitol

side one is amplified prepared pianos - screws, bolts, washers, felt inserted between piano strings "changing the tone color, attack, volume and duration of every note". two pianos playing a piece called Three Dances by composer John Cage. part of a stunning collection of LPs that I found at a thrift store a couple of weeks ago.

    John McLaughlin - Devotion
    (1972, Douglas) UK pressing

with Buddy Miles and Larry Young. I saw McLaughlin with Carlos Santana in 1973 during their tour in support of the Love Devotion Surrender record ...with Larry Young playing organ in that band. I found this at a flea market last weekend.

This disc must have been mixed on some JBL equipment because it feels right at home here. It is 33 years old and hasn't lost its edge.

follow up to the 1979 record With Friends Like These... lots of interesting guitar and other noises from these two, and a great sounding recording.

    Led Zeppelin - II
(1969, Atlantic) RL SS in the deadwax, sides 1/2; mastered by Robert Ludwig at Sterling Sound

Ok, I see why all the fuss about the RL pressing for this record. wow. Lots of space between the instruments, quite a step up from the thin sounding US version I've lived with for many years. I know this album's songlist forward and backward and I probably won't be able to listen to both sides because I suffer from overexposure, but it sounds really nice on this record. A $5 HPB grab in the past couple of weeks.

The Byrds - The Notorious Byrd Brothers
    (1968, Columbia) MONO

according to a wiki article this is one of the first LP releases with a Moog synthesizer. Lots of studio effects including phasing, flanging, and spatial panning and used to nice effect on songs like "Wasn't Born To Follow". I was surprised to see this excellent MONO pressing at HPB for $3 earlier this week. crazy prices at HPB, but sometimes it's a good crazy!
