    Songs For Japan

Not necessarily the world's greatest music, but this is some really good contemporary tunes for a real world tragedy.

Kudos to all the artists who contributed, even those whose musical vision escapes me.

Return to Forever IV tour with Zappa play Zappa!

wow - thanks for the heads up cool notes!!

Here is the Jazz Times note:

Three of the core members of the seminal jazz-rock group Return to Forever have joined forces again for a blockbuster tour, this time adding violinist Jean-Luc Ponty and guitarist Frank Gambale to the mix. The five will be doing a 32-city tour, beginning on August 7. Sharing a bill with RTF IV, as they’re calling themselves, will be Dweezil Zappa Plays Zappa, a tribute from son to father.

In a press release received at JazzTimes, Corea said: “Since all the guys in the band are such good composers, I wanted to have everyone’s compositions add to the new RTF IV vibe. So we all agreed: let’s open it up — which is the way we like it, and I think the way the fans like it too.”

David McCallum - Music - A Part Of Me
    (1966, Capitol) Mono; T 2432

no he's not Illya Kuryakin in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. here. produced by David Axelrod; really nice sounding mid 60s Capitol production with arrangements conceived by McCallum, a classically trained musician, using a blend of oboe, french horn, and strings with guitar and drums. The version of I Can't Get No Satisfaction is pretty awesome.

    Good God - self titled
(1972, Atlantic) "It Comes Off The Top" in the deadwax, side 2

Progressive Jazz fusion with Mahavishnu and Zappa influences, and they cover Zappa's King Kong and McLaughlin's Dragon Song. Great playing. Only one album and then these guys apparently disappeared without a trace. A garage sale find from a couple of years ago.

    McCartney - self titled
(1970, Apple) STA0-3363; STERLING LH / STERLING LH/RL in the deadwax, side 1/2; mastered by Lee Hulko / Robert Ludwig at Sterling Sound

Standard Apple 1970 pressing with no ABKCO on the back label. I also have a 1976 Capitol black label pressing. I picked up a couple of McCartney singles at a yard sale this am for 10cents each (Too Many People/Uncle Albert and Listen To What The Man Said/Love In Song); that got me thinking about singles that McCartney released that weren't on albums, like Juniors Farm and High, High, High. I think he played at least one of these when I saw McCartney and Wings in Seattle in the 80s - in a domed stadium, but a very nice band and it was goose-bumps time.
