There are quite some cultural lowlights here in Germanistan ! Anyhow, as almost anywhere, I think.

    Best regrárds!

McGuinness Flint, Happy Birthday, Ruthy Baby, 1971, Capitol France, C062-80838

Something unspectacular and sober for this Sunday morning. Produced and engineered by Glyn Johns. John Mumford, tr. Jimmy Jewell, sax. Nicky Hopkins, keyboard. Listen to "Friends of mine" B3.

Ian Matthews, Tigers Will Survive, 1971, Mercury USA, VEL 1010

A wonderful a cappella rendition of the Crystals' classic, bolstered only by hand claps, brings a lightness and energy to this record: "Da Doo Ron Ron" A4. A fine one. Guitars on the other tracks by Tim Renwick and Andy Roberts. Accordion by Woolfe J. Flywheel. Who? It's Richard Thompson.

Cannonball Adderley, Live!, 1965, Capitol USA, SM 2399

Listen to "The song my lady sings" B2. Joe Zawinul, p.
Zawinuls long solo (over 4 minutes) stands alone here as one of the memorable piano statements in contemporary jazz (cit: back cover liner notes by John Tynan)

Van Dyke Parks, Discover America, 1972, Edsel UK, ED 210

Listen to "Sailing shoes" B2 and "Riverboat" B3: Big wheel just a keep on turning...
Liner notes on inner sleeve by VDP: "To find out if a record company is playing cricket, you may find it's address on the record, write to the corporation in question, and solicit information on its profits, expenses and declared company policy. If a recording is meritorious musically, and still does not pay artists and composers in a fair fashion, you may then boycott sales of any particular record, tropically topical."
Good reissue 1986. This one is a little forgotten (?) gem.

Nighthawks, Open All Nite,1976, Adelphi USA, AD 4105

Covid19-crisis all over the world. The painting by Edward Hopper stands for the "lockdown" and "social distancing". Also Switzerland now has to accept these 2 new anglicisms.

Vitesse, Live In Germany, 1982, Philips Holland, 6423 532

"Would you buy a second-hand car from one of these guys?" (notice on front and back cover). Fantastic live recordings from this Dutch 3 musicians band. Great guitar playing by versatile German guitar hero Carl Carton.

Renaissance, Same, 1969, Elektra USA, EKS 74068

Different cover art as for the European pressings. Was the picture "The downfall of Icarus" by Claude Genisson not suitable for commercial success on USA music market? Prod: Paul Samwell-Smith. Engineer Andy Johns at Olympic Sound Studios, London. http://www.audioheritage.org/vbullet...l=1#post396460
PS: where is "Speaker Lab Fan"?

Hey! Lady Sodom Rahmanah! What a stunning debut from 1969, a year that really wasn't lacking of musical gems in general and great debuts in particular. My copy is the European Downfall one (Island 87609 ET).

    Best regards!
