Duke Ellington, New Orleans Suite, 1971, Atlantic USA, SD 1580

Dedicated to Johnny Hodges (1907-1970) who died during the sessions for this masterpiece album. So the "Portraits" of Louis Armstrong A3, Wellman Braud A5, Sidney Bechet B2 and Mahalia Jackson B4 were recorded without him. Wild Bill Davis was playing the Hammond on the memorable "Blues for New Orleans" A1. This track is the last blues and the last recording of that great blues player, Johnny Hodges....

Various Artists, The Age Of Atlantic, 1970, Atlantic 99 UK, 2464 013

Fancy cover art. Look at this elegant Zeppelin modelled in plasticine. Outstanding tracks with powerful female voices: Lydia Pense's Cold Blood "I'm a good woman" and Elkie Brook's Dada with a funky-jazzy "Last Time".

Esther Phillips, Confessin' The Blues, 1976, Atlantic Germany, ATL 50 222

Some like the voice of EP, some do not. I like the fine guitar tunes by Herb Ellis on tracks A2, A4 and A7, recorded 1966 with big band at United Studio, Los Angeles, California, produced by Neshui Ertegun. Side B is live with quartet at Freddie Jett's Pied Piper Club, Los Angeles, produced by King Curtis. Fantastic performances!

    Mandrill, Same, 1971, Polydor USA, 24-4050/2425 049

Mediocre US-reissue of unknown year. Recorded at Electric Lady, Winter 1970. Afro-funk-rock-latin-jazz-rock: a hot kind of witches' brew.

The "poor man's Allman Brothers"? No, not at all! Listen to the driving sound of the dueling twin guitars in "Cry no more" A5. Produced by Paul A. Rothchild.

Our local rock radio station (92.3) used to do "Catch a Rising Star" concerts at our Paramount theater for 92 cents admission. Grand old place.

Saw "Talking Heads" and "The Outlaws" there. Knew them well from the epic "Green Grass & High Tides". Very loud, but controlled.. nice show.

Eclectic collection of rare and unreleased jazz funk, latin funk, jazz, funk and back again. Listen to Boogaloo Joe Jones' 1976 "Sweetback" A1. Jazz funk at its best.

Rare Bird, As Your Mind Flies By, 1970, Charisma Germany, 6369 904

Great characteristic voice: Steve Gould plus an overdose of assorted keyboards supplied by Graham Field and Dave Kaffinetti. Listen to "Down on the floor" A2. Superb progrock.
Iconic front cover art work by John Pasche (tongue and lip design for......)!

Jimmy James And The Vagabonds, Open Up Your Soul, 1968, Pye England, NSPL 18231

Produced by John Schroeder for PYE Records: the easy listening music producer discovered this great voice. At the same time he launched the career of four young flower power musicians searching for the fourth chord with some pictures of matchsticks and men.
Listen to cover version of "Red red wine".
