    JBL 4425 monitors

I picked up a pair of 4425s this afternoon. I have been on the lookout for a pair of these for the bedroom system.

I'm listening to them in the main system now, and they have the same full-frequency magic as the 4430s in a smaller package. Wonderful speakers.

Thanks. I was able to grab these for less than half that amount, certainly under market rate, and made it do-able here.

Son in law was selling these, deceased was the original owner and took good care of them. No signs they've been molested. I don't see any flaws on the cabinets, really sharp looking. The Grill cloth and grill frames are very good as well. Mirror imaged. Serial numbers on the back are close. Seller had no idea if any repairs had been done. Foam and cones on woofers look very good.

I'm listening to them in the main room system, in place of the 4430s with a CTI jazz record on the Thorens.

All of the full-frequency magic that I associate with the 4430s is here. Wonderful smooth 3D sound as it was meant to be heard!

alongside the 4430s and getting the initial cat-scan. (Carver Amazings looming in the background).

How does the 4430 compare to the Carver Amazing? And is that a sub box for the Amazing?

    Thanks!

That sub box in the picture is the subwoofer module from Phase Linear Andromeda III's -the Andromeda panels are in another room - which is where the box is headed. The Amazings have four 12" woofers in an open baffle, plenty of low frequency and I can't imagine using a subwoofer with them.

Interesting question - VERY different speakers and I've never used the same sources for a direct comparison. The Amazings are VERY inefficient and the 4430s are fairly efficient. Ribbons, Open baffles on one hand and Bi-radial horns with a 15" woofer in a ported box on the other hand -- sorry if you are familiar with the designs. I enjoy listening to both of them alot - they both do alot of things right in my room to my ears. The 4430s are not fussy about placement. The Amazings need lots of room and at least 250 WPC, better to have 500 WPC to really open up. I'm pretty sure I don't have the optimum setup - room is too small. They have thundering bass and spooky lifelike mids and highs. Very entertaining especially with jazz, rock, or fusion. But for my ears, the 4430s are my favorites because they seem to very faithfully reproduce what's given to them. I'm thinking that the 4425s will do the same thing in the bedroom system - it's a 12x12 space.

Thanks guys. I have a lot of "keepers" but I think the 4430s are the last man standing if it came to that.

The 4425s are going into the smaller room setup tomorrow, I'll try to get a picture. It's going to be fun to see how they sound - replacing a pair of Klipsch Fortes there.

I really like the 44xx series and a 4435, when/if I track one down, with the others would make an interesting HT setup.

There are some super tasty JBLs available locally (L300 and 250Ti). Congratulations on yours, Punch. I'd really like to hear the 250Ti someday.

I have a couple of pairs of the Amazings (Silvers & Originals), plus the Andromedas. One of the advantages of living in Bob Carver's neighborhood.

One of the Andromeda panels is seen in the background here (as well as the 4430s).

Thanks! After I heard Powerman talking about how much everybody loved his 250Ti's and remembering them when I was a teenager, I just had to find a pair.

I like your vinyl? ....and the Hendrix pic.

Any links to some MFSL? I am looking for Fagen's "The Nightfly" on MFSL...and Rafferty's City to City....sorry to hijack the thread a bit...your vinyl made me do it

I don't have a pointer to MSFL version of The Nightfly. I'm in the middle of sorting many thousands, I'll PM you if I run across an extra copy. Funny you ask about Rafferty - great stuff, I see these quite often when making the rounds, and I picked up a NM copy for an audio pal last weekend at the local Half Price books for 50 cents. It's traveling across the country by media mail as we speak, and he is sending me a copy of Thin Lizzy - Self Titled. If I see another I'll grab and let you know.

Back on topic -- on the JBL 44xx monitors, these records are reproduced with a great deal of accuracy.

Those really are sweet, I think I'm going to set my sights on some 4425/30/35s. BTW, all of your rooms look great, even stuffed to the rafters with gear.
Any chance that you might bring the 4425s or '30s to the gathering?

How does one apply for admission to the "gathering"?

Would love the chance to absorb & learn more JBL goodness since one can't simply run in a showroom in stateside for demo.

    .
Every spring since 2007, there has been a gathering of audio enthusiasts living in the Pacific Northwest. I have hosted the last two of said gatherings in Kelso, and it looks like I'm going to host it again in 2010.
It's pretty loosely organized, and it is essentially both a swap meet and a show and shine for all things audio. You don't have anything to sell? No prob, just bring a system or item you would like to show off. Nothing to show off, but might like to buy some stuff? Also, no problem. Just want to bring some LPs down? Also good.
There is no minimum gear standard, either. Audio snobbery is just, well, snobbish. Last year, and every year, there has been a great mix of beat up vintage, very nice vintage, and very nice new gear being displayed by proud owners.
I will make the announcement over on AK, and if it's OK with the mods here, I will have a link to it in my signature.
