My concern stems from wondering how far from the walls ( side & rear ) these should be. I could not find any mention of this in a search.

    Thanks.

This greatly depends on your room. Espescially the makeup of your walls will determine this. The level of transmission, reflection and absorbption will set the "rules" of your room.

    Okay, I'll bite.

I've got S/2600s in the big master bedroom and SAM1HF units in the bottom level HT. Ooh! ooh! and I've got LE14H-3 units in the PS1400 subs. So these are informed but indirect comments.

The horns: these are different beasts. The S/2600 horn is big, unusual, and intended for use in a two-way system used primarily for two-channel sound. The SAM1HF is relatively smaller and intended for three-or four-way use in either two-channel or multi-channel applications. They do not sound the same.

The woofer: The LE14H-3 is a wonderful driver (used in the 1400 Array) that is musical, articulate, and strong. The ME120H in the S/2600 is a very good woofer, too, but it's not the equal of the LE14H-3 and it can run out of gas if driven too hard. Plus, it's covering a lot more ground in that two-way design, so it's stretched out at both ends.

The S/2600 is a very good speaker, and I plan to keep a pair for a long time. It's a very pleasing, easy to listen to, dynamic, and smooth design, that brings a fantastic sense of realism to stereo sound. I've heard the 1400 Array and, as I wrote, I have the SAM1HF units in my HT, and they are better than the S/2600 in almost every way. It's more powerful, more detailed, smoother, and cleaner, and it performs with greater ease--hardly breaking a sweat even at insane levels.

Thanks TD. The S2600 ARE a very good speaker & work well with McIntosh equipment.

Can the same be said for the 1400 Array's? Good with McIntosh?

Let us know if you're going to take the plunge.

BTW, I have a line on a used pair here in SoCal. I could troll for the bottom line price. There's no way I could bring these home after the Synthesis® acquisition.

Thanks TD. By the way, that Synthesis system must be awesome. I think I would have a hard time leaving my house if I had something like that.

If you are serious about 1400 Arrays and are cool with second hand, you should take Dome up on his offer... he continually amazes me at the deals he finds.

It's become my second favorite room, if you know what I mean.

Nobody spends any time there anymore; just ask the newspaper and magazine publishers!
